going to have to pay

I much prefer to read a newspaper while lounging on a settee, laying in bed, soaking in the bath - much better than being hunched over a computer getting a stiff neck.

If you're near a library, you can read all the papers for free.

bookdreamer Wed 27-Mar-13 20:12:25

phoenix I had to google that after you'd posted! Had the song but not who sang it.

I think all newspapers will go behind a paid wall soon. And I think quite rightly so.

Don't usually post much on here but have been following your job seeking. Am so pleased you have a job! Not quite sure when you are going to start it. However, don't even think about the driving. It'll be fine. Once you've done it it'll be a doddle! Will be thinking of you.

GA that sounds good. Sadly in Scotland there are hardly any Waitrose. There's one in Edinburgh about 15 miles away hmm so not suitable for daily visits!

Gally Wed 27-Mar-13 20:03:35

I always keep up with the news by logging onto the DT website from Oz and was surprised to be barred from it after 20 'goes' this week. Have now started on the DM blush which seems to let me read everything! I much prefer an actual newspaper but have been restricting myself of late to weekends only. Will look into subscribing if it gives you online access too. I haven't subscribed for years as I am away so much and didn't want to waste money on unread papers.

If you have a my Waitrose card you can get a free daily Telegraph or a free Daily Mail Monday to Friday every day. I occasionally get a free Telegraph when I'm low on fire-lighting spills - I can't bring myself to pick up a DM even to use for lighting a fire. You can also pick up a free cup of (very nice) coffee if you want.

Damn, that's put a song in my head!

"Oh, I can gather all the news I need on the weather report"............

Ana Wed 27-Mar-13 19:43:07

So now they're losing money on printed papers, they'll gradually all start charging for the online version....hmm

bookdreamer Wed 27-Mar-13 19:37:05

ana I presume because that's how people want to read things nowadays. I suspect they're trying to get the younger people who have stopped buying a printed paper to read them on their tablet device, phone etc. I expect lots of young people however don't feel the need to buy a paper, whether it be online or the printed article, as they can get all the info they need on the Internet.

DH and I read our papers together in bed in the morning - him on the iPad and me with the hard copy then we compare our answers to the crossword! Who says romance is dead when you're over 60? grin

Anne58 Wed 27-Mar-13 19:30:06

I buy the DT everyday except Sunday, when I am still reading the extra sections in Saturday's edition.

I really don't see myself switching to on-line only, partly because the best way to tackle the crossword is with a pen! Mr P and I start on the General Knowledge one in the Weekend section whilst in the pub with friends, part of our Racing Club ritual. Once home, we use reference books to try to solve some of the other clues, Googling NOT Allowed until at least Sunday, and then only if the frustration has reached unbearable levels!

Also do love sitting up in bed on a Sunday morning, with "proper" coffee and having a first go at the cryptic crossword from the main section, moving cat's bottoms from the very bit I am trying to read, looking at the birth announcements and sometimes being shock at the names some people give their offspring.

All part of the gentle rhythm of the weekend.

Ana Wed 27-Mar-13 19:29:58

Why put them online in the first place? It was obvious the paper sales would go down.

bookdreamer Wed 27-Mar-13 19:16:37

Papers are losing money hand over fist. I think it's entirely reasonable that you have to pay to read their newspapers online. You have to pay to read the printed version. I subscribe to the Times and their app is great. However, I do buy the print version on a Saturday. You can't beat a printed newspaper!

Ana Wed 27-Mar-13 18:23:47

Goodnight, Nonu...grin

janeainsworth Wed 27-Mar-13 18:22:38

Sounds good Gracesmum. Will have to look into it.
Waitrose annoy me with their free this and free that. The other week it was a free cup of coffee for spending more than £50..... except our local Waitrose doesn't have a COFFEE SHOP!!!
When I asked if I could take the voucher and use in in John Lewis in Newcastle they said NO!!

Nonu Wed 27-Mar-13 18:21:58

It is bound to happen though jo8

j08 Wed 27-Mar-13 18:18:54

Oh yes. A subscription. Of course.

Seems unfair to someone who picks it up at the Co-op. Not that I do. Will be sad if all the newspapers go behind a firewall.

gracesmum Wed 27-Mar-13 18:11:07

I have a sub to the Telegraph which costs less than the cover priceand DH gets his iPad version download free. Would you consider that? There are some other perks including a free cup of coffee at Debenhams but I have yet to avail myself.

annodomini Wed 27-Mar-13 18:05:11

Waitrose were giving away copies of either DM or Torygraph last week and, I think, the week before. I don't expect this to be permanent. Would have preferred the I.

j08 Wed 27-Mar-13 18:05:01

I don't understand how they can tell if you are a print subscriber. Or not. confused

janeainsworth Wed 27-Mar-13 18:02:07

Ah. Read it properly now blush
It says print subscribers will have unlimited access to the website....
ana I think my twisted logic was that if I had to pay any more than I do at the moment, I would cut out the most expensive bit (the print version).
Agree it doesn't make sense. I've got a bad cold today.
#notthinkingstraight

Ana Wed 27-Mar-13 17:45:12

Wouldn't you be more likely to buy it from a newsagent if you couldn't read it online, Jane? confused

Nonu Wed 27-Mar-13 17:43:42

Is it not cheaper to buy from newsagent though ?
