Hard to believe

There has been an item on local radio today that it is 50 years since Bristol Omnibus Co (as they then were) announced they would not employ black drivers or conducters. It really is hard to believe from our more enlightened times that a company could actually make such an announcement. It wasn't until there was a boycott of the buses (by both black and white) that the company changed its mind.

There was an interesting interview with a man who said when he was born in Jamaica he was first British then Jamaican but when he came to UK in 1952 he wasn't British or Jamaican, he was just black.

I can recall when looking for a flat just before I was married in 1970 seeing notices saying "No dogs, no Irish, no Blacks"

I remember that when I was living there! Given that Bristol got all its wealth from the slave trade it was even more appalling.

I was surprised when I realised that the horrendous Section 28 was enacted as late as 1988.
