Changing patent laws in the UK is not going to have any effect elsewhere. These big transnational companies are the only ones who can afford to take out patents all over the world.
j08 I think this potential patent is probably the same process as a pharma company tried to use – I'm not sure whether they were successful – to patent the DNA of some traditional South American herbal medicines.
Incidentally, it's not fennel as in the bulb. Nigella seeds, also known as kalonji, are used in a lot of Indian and Middle Eastern recipes.
I've signed. I try to avoid buying nestle products ever since I heard about them selling infant formula to mothers in third world countries many years ago.
Monsanto were up to similar tricks with maize genes. BIG companies have a ridiculous amount of clout. I once read a sci fi story about a future in which big business ruled the world and it all seemed terrifyingly possible.
Signed and shared. Whilst on the somofus site, I was horrified to notice that the car hire firm I used, Enterprise, is a sponsor of the US gun lobby. I won't be using them again. Reading the somofus site, I am sickened by the things big businesses will do to make a profit. Tesco is tagging its employees.
"Nigella sativa -- more commonly known as fennel flower -- has been used as a cure-all remedy for over a thousand years. It treats everything from vomiting to fevers to skin diseases, and has been widely available in impoverished communities across the Middle East and Asia.
"But now Nestlé is claiming to own it, and trying take control over the natural cure of the fennel flower in order to turn it into a costly private drug. Please join me in telling Nestlé to stop trying to patent this natural cure"
