He has been charged but I suppose we must wait to see how he pleads.
If he is guilty, he must be either mad or so full of hubris he thinks he can get away with anything.

I didn't think he had been charged yet Greatnan? Shami Chakrabati (?) was very clear about the difference between being arrested and being charged whilst talking to Jeremy Vine this morning.

He looks such an affable man it's difficult to imagine it but we all know how deceptive looks can be.

WHAT IS IT WITH THESE PEOPLE???? I am beginning to wonder about the male sex in general - why on earth can't they behave?

Mishap Sun 05-May-13 11:16:25

I am not clear about the law here. If he has been bailed, I aasume he has been charged - or does this not follow? I am sure someone can put me right on this.

It is interesting how sex and money often bring these powerful men down. Very sad really.

No, you don't have to be charged, but can be bailed after arrest on suspicion, Mishap. He will be bailed to return to the police station on a certain date whilst investigations are carried out. His solicitor will check out what progress they are making, and if he isn't charged in due course, will insist he shouldn't be on bail. If the evidence looks convincing, there are advantages to being on police bail, rather than be charged and produced in court, where bail or remand is decided.

What happened to 'innocent until proven guilty'? He may well have offended, but...........

Presumed innocent until proven guilty. It's not quite the same thing.

I am also unclear as to why the accusers retain anonymity but the accused is named and shamed even if there are no grounds.

It's as near as dammit absent !

Maybe gracesmum other witnesses or victims might come forward if no anonymity?

He has not been charged , let alone tried and convicted, so we should reach no conclusions about whether he is guilty or not.

In my area there have been a number of cases recently where rape accusations were made maliciously to 'get even' with someone or get the accuser out of tight spot. There has been no rape trial but the accuser has been in court for wasting police time.
