Just read that the Judge in the case of the artist who was convicted of indecent photographing of children has given the "artist" a suspended sentence. Ovenden is reported to have been relieved not to have been imprisoned, but continues to insist he didn't commit any crimes, or cause any distress to the children involved. I also read this morning that Lord McAlpine is selling his collection of Ovenden's photographs of naked children. There is so much wrong with this - maybe I should be posting in am i being unreasonable to be disgusted.

Petallus, can I respectfully ask you to read my post of 14.30 47. It addresses your point.

Greatnan Wed 05-Jun-13 20:54:40

If only some people had been 'over zealous' or 'prudish' when Savile was abusing vulnerable children.

Yes, MiceElf you post does address the point. I certainly agree with your second paragraph.

Also, some other thoughtful posts I've now noticed.

I still feel unsure about censorship of images which have not yet been made illegal.

Censorship stifles debate.

I'm going over to Mumsnet to see what they have to say.

It doesn't seem fair does it j08?

Deedaa Wed 05-Jun-13 21:36:58

I've alays been in two minds about Henry Tuke the Newlyn artist. His paintings of young men and boys cavorting in the Cornish sunshine are still very popular but I always find myself why they all have to be naked and exactly who was buying them, and why.

annsixty Wed 05-Jun-13 21:46:26

Elton John apparently owns many Henry Tuke paintings!!!I can't say why.

j08 Wed 05-Jun-13 22:04:15

Oh yes. why would Elton like this one?

j08 Wed 05-Jun-13 22:04:43

Oh shite! I've done it again! hmm

Tegan Wed 05-Jun-13 22:05:18

I've never heard of Henry Tuke till I read this. Feel very uncomfortable with what I've seen of them.

j08 Wed 05-Jun-13 22:10:14

could be Alexander and Hephaestion

j08 Wed 05-Jun-13 22:12:41

That deletion down there was to do with my getting that other one deleted.

Ana Wed 05-Jun-13 22:16:05

Bit farcical, isn't it? grin

petallus Wed 05-Jun-13 22:18:34

I wonder if it's possible to find the naked human body beautiful without it being sexual.

Tegan Wed 05-Jun-13 22:18:37

What about Michelangelo's David? Leda and the Swan? Where does one draw the line at what is accepable in art now. I'm getting confused. I did once say to my daughter's art teacher that I'd seen some work by Balthus that I thought was good [I'd read that David Bowie was a fan] and he was horrified. At the time I just thought they were interesting and well painted.

j08 Wed 05-Jun-13 22:20:50

I think the Tuke ones are quite beautiful

Sel Wed 05-Jun-13 22:23:08

j08 in spite of censorship, you have provoked a very interesting debate. I can see both sides, why the original link upset those with first hand experience of child abuse and for myself the issue of why your link was deleted by Gransnet. I still think your link should have remained, I do abhor censorship but I guess GN's rules rule, so to speak smile I never have read the small print.
