One cheer for this news.11 women a day leave Eire for an abortion in England or Wales. Desperate women will find a way. The priest-ridden country was forced into this by the terrible and unnecessary death of a young mother. The doctors were 'confused' because the Catholic church's teaching was so convoluted. How can any doctor allow a woman to die because of some legal/religious quibble?

I think the government has been very brave, knowing what the backlash from the pulpits will be. Sorry absent - I forgot about you people far away - it probably didn't lead your news

Ireland is going to allow women whose lives are in danger due to pregnancy, can have an abortion. Not yet for rape or incest but it's a start. Small steps. Sadly women wanting an abortion for any other reason will have to travel to the UK or Ulster for one. It is one of the few truly Catholic countries left, although countries like Italy are catholic abortion is permitted. It is separating church from state.

Well it's a start although women have paid with their lives for this to happen at last- now for cases where women are pregnant through rape and/or incest.
