Looking after grandchildren - do you receive childcare credits?

Didn't know anything about them.
To be fair I am not worried about NI contributions as HM GOV have kindly told me that I have made the maximum contribution needed to get my full entitlement to the pittance of a State Pension once I am 66!! I have always either been working or claiming Child Benefit for my own children under 12 (class 3 credits)
Surely Grandparents would only be entitled to these credits if they were full time carers to the grandchildren in question. I only have mine on an ad hoc basis as his father works shifts and the rest of the family help out too.
I think some way of grandparents being able to benefit from the childcare voucher scheme or a tax break would be more welcome.

Perhaps I should have said 'caring for a child' credit. The Class 3 credits near the bottom of the first table.

I certainly didn't know that I could be eligible

Lara - do you mean child care credits or NI credits ( which the link takes us to) I'm confused

We've been contacted by the media wanting to know what gransnetters thoughts are about childcare credits available to grandparents. www.hmrc.gov.uk/ni/intro/credits.htm

Is this something any of you use? Or are eligible for but have been unaware of? Is it enough - or do you think the government should be doing more?
