I know I shouldn't laugh but, honestly! grin

And the conversation continues:

@Singh_Mo @sunny_hundal Yes. I arrived in 2000. The perjorative intent of many terms from the Jurassic period no longer apply.

ManMohan Singh Punia (@Singh_Mo)

@Khyberman The intent as used by a man who did his schooling in 60's is exactly as it was then #GodfreyBloom knows it too! @sunny_hundal

@Singh_Mo And now, because of the faux outrage, so do millions more. Kids have a new racist term to play with. @sunny_hundal

Bags Wed 07-Aug-13 20:44:14

Phew!

j08 Wed 07-Aug-13 20:36:53

Maybe hungry and ill children in third world countries don't have the chance to give a damn?

Ana Wed 07-Aug-13 20:32:27

I'm sure some of us do, Bags! It's the usual 'taking offence on behalf of other people who couldn't give a damn' syndrome...

j08 Wed 07-Aug-13 20:30:46

Jess? Whaaat?! confused

Bags Wed 07-Aug-13 20:13:36

These turned up in my Twitter feed:

Banti Singh (@Khyberman)

Okay, I get it now. I'm a recent immigrant, so not sure of the connotations - can anyone tell me WHY Bongo-bongo is deemed offensive?

(so it's not just me) and after someone explained...

Banti Singh (@Khyberman)

@JulesSunbeam When was this? When we thought the earth was flat? This is 2013!!

I was going to ask... Have any people of non-European descent complained?

I don't expect people will understand what I'm getting at. Never mind.

JessM Wed 07-Aug-13 20:12:51

Do they absent - always rather thought the latter me'self grin
Maybe people cut him some slack for having slept with the queen and fathered heirs. Can't imagine she was a barrel load of laughs ... but then there is the plausible theory that he was a cad and a bounder and did not deserve her. So racist and cad.
(You can jump in here jo8 and say what a lovely old man he is and what a devoted young one he was, honestly, and how chatting up teenagers was fine too wasn't it in the 1940s if you had your eye on a nice palace to live in after the war...)
I think i had better stop now... moon

Galen Wed 07-Aug-13 20:12:28

At the bottom. He has a valid question, no matter how badly it was phrased?

absent Wed 07-Aug-13 20:02:22

It is interesting that when the Duke of Edinburgh makes equally crass remarks, many people seem to think that he is just charmingly droll rather than an ignorant racist.

Ariadne Wed 07-Aug-13 19:46:03

Yes, the problem is that they are a breed who think (if they do) that they are something important and special. There are a lot of them about too!

Sel Wed 07-Aug-13 19:42:24

Yes but this is obviously his mind set - I've met many of the same ilk years ago..it all seems so antiquated, so Golf Club smile Must worry Nigel Farrage - he's spent lots of time appearing main stream.

Ariadne Wed 07-Aug-13 19:27:51

He's a politician, Sel and will therefore feel free to say what he wants, when he wants, without worrying about the consequences. If he had an agenda, he's really mucked it up, hasn't he?

Wouldn't it be good if those who have taken on responsibilities acted responsibly? Too much to ask, I suppose. Like you, naive of me to consider it!

Sel Wed 07-Aug-13 19:09:30

A bit odd really, the term harks back decades and indeed as explained here, to those 50s & 60s stereotypes. His objection was actually to the Foreign Aid budget to countries who now have nuclear capability. I would have thought UKIP drew their support from those of an anti EU mindset. Naïve of me.

j08 Wed 07-Aug-13 18:55:14

Apparently he has now issued an apology. And the Ukip chairman doubts whether he will be a candidate again.

nanaej Wed 07-Aug-13 17:50:25

I am sorry he has had so much air/media time.

nanaej Wed 07-Aug-13 17:48:55

Trouble is I think it was deliberate and calculated to appeal to racists. That can be dangerous and not funny. There may be a context where it would be funny but not sure this is it!

j08 Wed 07-Aug-13 17:24:23

Oh, you've got to laugh when a "politician" can be that stupid.

nanaej Wed 07-Aug-13 17:19:43

I do not find the term bongo bongo land as used by that pratt at all amusing. It was used deliberately by him to appeal to racists. The term has history an d he knew that. I am happy to have a responsible discussion on foregin aid without the use of demeaning and derogatory terms.

Bags Wed 07-Aug-13 17:17:25

As well as other places.

Bags Wed 07-Aug-13 17:17:15

PS Re Capt Cook, there were cannibals in the Fiji islands, of course.

Bags Wed 07-Aug-13 17:15:39

And the worrying thing is that they really do have the other parties worried. That's what's scary.

JessM Wed 07-Aug-13 17:06:29

I suspect Captain Cook has a lot to answer for. I was reading extracts from his voyages in the south seas. Sometimes he thought the locals were good looking and sometimes ugly (frizzy hair Arrgh!). His description of Fijians is rather close to the stereotype above.
One lot thought he was a god and gave him their prized red feather cloak (in Wellington Te Papa museum to this day) and eventually one lot took against him and finished him off.
It has been commented, I think, that Farage is the only UKIP candidate/representative with even half a brain... And this is the lot that have the major parties worrying about seats in the next general election.

j08 Wed 07-Aug-13 17:03:28

Oh yes, it's definitely a 60's thing. And racist. Can't believe he actually came out with it. Can't have done his party a lot of good.

Or perhaps it has. sad

whenim64 Wed 07-Aug-13 17:02:12

The politicians who continually make gaffes are not only foolish, but still seem to get elected! Beats me!

whenim64 Wed 07-Aug-13 17:00:27

Bags in the 50s and 60s comics depicted black people wearing grass skirts, carrying African spears and having bones through their noses. Nothing about being geographically or racially correct for the purpose of creating a comic strip.
