Had to laugh when I read this. A woman reported the carriage 'smelt fishy' www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-23610105 Poor shark! When I've been on the underground the most exciting thing I've ever found is a broken umbrella. Where are all the exciting things people are always saying end up in lost property?

Reminds me of the cheese chapter in Three Men in Boat [not to mention the dog].

I once left a library book on the train. When I went to Lost Property they asked for the title and rather red-faced I said 'The Idiot'

People leave really weird things on trains. For example, you can't help wondering how someone could fail to notice that he had left behind a prosthetic leg when he got up to get off.

We were on the train from Naples to Herculaneum and an old man got on with a carrier bag full of "things" all tentacles and suckers. At the next station a very smart business man got on and sat next to the old man. In England he would have taken one look and retreated in horror, and probably complained to the guard. Being Italy they instantly got into a detailed conversation about what was in the bag, how it was going to be cooked and how their respective mothers would have cooked it.

Octopus! Lovely!(needs to be very well beaten until it gets tender.)Then boiled and served with a good olive oil vinaigrette!
Gorgeous!

(First catch your octopus?)

Many years ago we travelled by train to the south of Italy. The further south we travelled the more prone people were to sharing everything they had to eat with everyone else [and the poorer they seemed to be as well].

I still remember leaving my teddy on the train to Margate when we had out first holiday when I was four - it has scarred me for life!

"our" - doh!

I left a carrier bag of Queen records on a plane between the Isle of Man and Newcastle when I was about 13. Some scum bag stole them I never got them back despite my mum ringing lost property and teling them exactly where they would be.

I'd like to think that he found a new home and had lots of wonderful adventures Gillie smile. A thousand curses on whoever had your Queen records gilybob angry.

My DD left the car doors open when she was washing the car while she popped in for some more water. Came back, all the kids' CDs were gone from the car door pocket.

Tegan Fri 09-Aug-13 14:39:13

... a thousand curses to that miserable thief as well.....

PRINTMISS Fri 09-Aug-13 15:46:31

How about this j08. My husband parked his car, walked up the drive, went into the garage, (it was already open), back to his car and the four wheel hubs had been removed! It was a SAAB, and police said they were probably stolen to order. There were four young men walking up the road, but of course my husband did not associate them with the crime, although a gentleman who had just walked past them said each one was carrying something! They were long gone by the time my husband had gathered himself together after the shock - his beloved car!

My son had a pair of trainers stolen from our back porch. How we laughed as they had been put there to try to get rid of the disgusting odour. We had visions of the thief speeding off in his car, only to keel over a few yards down the road. grin

When I lived in New York there was a constant urban myth that there were crocodiles and snakes in the NY subway system. Deserted pets apparently - no one had ever seen them or found them.

@Deedaa - Love your Italian story - first big laugh of my day!

My husband doesn`t have a good thing to say about Tunisia, all because his new trainers were stolen from the beach. He doesn`t see that it was rather silly to leave them there whilst he went for a swim!
