I have just heard announcement of his death on the news. Only 74? I can remember TWTWTW from so many years ago as probably my first experience of grown up television, political satire and some wonderful sketches. Wonderful Millicant Martin, Lance Percival's calypsos and the cartoonist who died so young - was that Timothy Beardsall? sad

TW3 great, yes definitely. David Frost? bright boy, but too much in love with himself; king of the bigheads. Raise a glass (or several) to Seamus Heaney, king of the word.
A happy and healthy New Year to all the Gransnetters.

#worried What did I post? Can't remember.

j08 Sun 01-Sept-13 22:48:22

Ah... ! but I've read your posts on the "Sex" thread.

Men don't know stuff like that. [nods head sagely]

Ana Sun 01-Sept-13 22:34:46

See - those profiles mean nothing! grin

Elegran Sun 01-Sept-13 22:32:42

How do you know? I could have been fooling you all for years.

j08 Sun 01-Sept-13 22:26:58

Elegran you're not a man. shock

yogagran Sun 01-Sept-13 22:19:50

"Remember his TV heyday"? - I was part of it! TW3 was the very first programme that I worked on when I was at the Beeb.
David Frost was a mere slip of a lad grin

Elegran Sun 01-Sept-13 20:58:31

74 is not old! I am 74!

annodomini Sun 01-Sept-13 20:38:18

Old chook, that's me.

Nonu Sun 01-Sept-13 20:27:11

ANNO , come on you know you are a spring chicken !

celebgran Sun 01-Sept-13 20:18:45

sad.

Then my acquacise tutor mum passed away yesterday only 71 cancer

Oh hell this is morbid!

Greatnan Sun 01-Sept-13 20:02:54

I don't suppose all that jetting across the Atlantic several times a week helped his health.

absent Sun 01-Sept-13 20:00:32

Not just TW3 but also The Frost Report. There's no "heir" coming along behind is there? sad

j08 Sun 01-Sept-13 19:57:59

Too many after dinner speeches. Or rather the dinners that come first.

annodomini Sun 01-Sept-13 19:52:07

Oh, thanks, Nonu. Some of us are already almost there ... or thereabouts.

Nonu Sun 01-Sept-13 19:24:40

I thought he did not look so good in the last picture I saw of him !

74 is not the oldest , but is getting on a bit .

gracesmum Sun 01-Sept-13 19:16:40

My first reaction was to say "ONLY 74, that's no age" just as my parents used to!

annodomini Sun 01-Sept-13 19:12:23

Two major figures gone within a few days: Seamus Heaney and David Frost, both giants in their fields and both only 74.

Deedaa Sun 01-Sept-13 18:25:14

Timothy Birdsall was the cartoonist gracesmum I remember being devastated when he died, there was never any suggestion he was ill and I think he was only 26. I remember Cliff Michelmore in tears on Tonight when he announced it.

It's a bit of a shock to have David gone. He wasn't that much older than me and they all seemed so young at the time. What a pity that television has become all "celebrities", intrusive music and fancy camera work - nothing to make you think at all.

Aka Sun 01-Sept-13 17:28:12

sad

RIP

gracesmum Sun 01-Sept-13 15:29:03

I agree Anno - I remember Millicent Martin's song especially. Brave of them not to just cancel the show and to make such a strong and memorable programme. The "Frost-Nixon" film was on TV recently, naybe that's why nonu's family were talking about him.
Re "public figures" not looking well, I find it hard not to envisage them in their prime as that is how I think of them. I was shocked, for instance by the frailty of the Duchess of Kent at (I think) either Wills and Kate's wedding or Margaret Thatcher's funeral - a big service anyway. As they fade from the public eye we tend of think of them as we used to see them, don't we?

glammanana Sun 01-Sept-13 15:19:10

TW3 a favourite family programme of ours,so sad to hear this news.

Mishap Sun 01-Sept-13 14:52:56

I thought that in the last few years he really looked quite unwell poor chap. TW3 was a flagship programme and a must for all our family. Sorry to see him go.
