That really is lovely Greatnan. Very pleased for you. smile

MiceElf Thu 12-Sept-13 22:02:17

Jo I shall pray for you. Even if it makes you crosser smile

Greatnan Thu 12-Sept-13 22:01:39

I don't know about you, jingle, but I am extremely happy tonight! My son-in-law has been appointed as harbourmaster/pilot in Nelson harbour and they have bought a lovely new house, with lots of room for me to visit. I am radiating love and peace to all Gransnetters. smile

j08 Thu 12-Sept-13 21:58:37

Yeah. It's lovely. smile

Shall I explain it again, jingle? I welcome any progress in the fight to have women treated as equals in whatever sphere they choose. If a woman wants to be a priest or a bishop, I am glad that route is open to her.
It is nice to be able to post positive remarks, isn't it?

MiceElf Thu 12-Sept-13 21:34:14

I don't know what your problem is, Jo numbers. It doesn't matter if people have a religious belief or not, they can still be glad for those of us who do when good things happen in the church.

To draw an analogy, I'm not a monarchist, but I was pleased that the firstborn would succeed whatever the gender.

Why are you so contentious? Just rejoice and be glad as the Psalmist says.

Galen Thu 12-Sept-13 21:32:19

Rose it is a win for women regardless of belief!
What is your problem with that?

MiceElf Thu 12-Sept-13 21:30:11

Yes, thanksgiving in order all round.

j08 Thu 12-Sept-13 21:29:45

I was surprised that two people who make no bones about the fact that they are non-believers, would care whether women were bishops or not.

I wonder why the strike through facility is provided.

Greatnan Thu 12-Sept-13 21:25:24

I know progress is slow, but I feel there has been a real change in attitude in the mainstream Christian churches. Micelf, I thought I heard a reference to the possibility of priests being allowed to marry on the radio today.
As an atheist, my interest is just in the light these changes shed on the general change in attitude to women in all kinds of institutions. Onwards and upwards.

Anniebach Thu 12-Sept-13 21:00:25

Thank you MiceElf, we did think the vote would be favourable but it was joyous when confirmed, we can but pray England will follow x

MiceElf Thu 12-Sept-13 20:40:44

Sorry it should be + Paul.

MiceElf Thu 12-Sept-13 20:19:53

Stansgran, my Anglican friends tell me that +Peter (formerly of Southwell and Nottingham) is personally very respected, theologically similar to ++Justin ie from an evangelical background and socially liberal. Durham can expect continuity which is probably good as ++ Justin was not there for very long.

Ariadne Thu 12-Sept-13 20:18:03

It is good news both for the church and for women everywhere - another weakening of male domination!

MiceElf Thu 12-Sept-13 19:58:27

I am neither Welsh nor a member of the episcopal church in Wales, but I am pleased by this decision. The Holy Spirit is clearly being listened to and her influence felt in one of the countries of Great Britain and I extend sisterly and prayerful congratulations across the border.

Greatnan Thu 12-Sept-13 19:38:30

It is quite a good trick, isn't it? Attach a completely irrelevant word to a concept, use it often enough, and hope people will start to believe it. Militant means warlike, I have always believed - are women who want to see equality for all starting to take up arms and shoot the men who are oppressing them? Hm......
Jingle - one definition of heathen is simply a person who is not an adherent of the three Abrahamic religions - I am happy to accept that description, so you have no need to do your silly crossing out trick. For goodness sake, either have the courage to say what you mean or don't say it at all.

absent Thu 12-Sept-13 19:14:16

j08 At what point does feminisim become militant? Are you opposed to equal rights for men and women? Is your opposition militant or non-militant?

j08 Thu 12-Sept-13 19:11:48

No Anniebach definitely not the Welsh!

j08 Thu 12-Sept-13 19:11:07

Ah! Militant feminism. Ok. smile

JessM Thu 12-Sept-13 18:35:35

Because I don't like to see able women sidelined in any walk of life jo8 why do you think?

Anniebach Thu 12-Sept-13 18:30:16

Ana ! Oh I am so sorry jo8

Ana Thu 12-Sept-13 18:16:34

I don't think J08 was talking about the Welsh, Anniebach....

We have a new bish in Durham. Not a woman Does anyone know what he's like? Hellfire and damnation or touchy feely? I think he's from Sheffield.

Ana Thu 12-Sept-13 18:15:28
