If the teacher said , ' Susan is heere your grandad to take you to the doctor' and Susan B got up and went, apparently happily, and Susan A sat still then the teacher probably thought she had got it wrong!

Middle of the day collections are usually through the school office so it does sound as if the school did not have quite tight enough checks in place but I do think granddad needs to take some of the responsibility blame. Good job no real harm was done!

My DIL has to email photos of DH and I to school when collecting GC and even to younger ones child minder, not that there is any doubt as she screams Granda and hurtles through the playground usually knocking me flying to reach Granda.
I would be concerned that the old man didn't know his grandchild well enough to recognise her, obviously not competent to look after her.

Well at least the child is safe. What beggars belief is that the Grandfather didn't recognise his own granddaughter. And the school's Safeguarding Procedures need to be revised (perhaps at an INSET day!!).

Our GS's school operates a password system. If the teacher doesn't recognise you when you come to collect a child they ask for and check the password.

I did once wave across the playground to my 'grandson' when I came to pick him up, and was walking towards the look-alike, only to realise my actual GS was coming out of a different door. The look-alike waved back! Truly a Specsavers moment.

My GD's teachers do the same thing, Tegan - the children have to say they know the person collecting them if it isn't someone known to the staff.

That's why this story seems so strange - it seems the teacher just handed the child over to the 'granddad' without question!

My grandson is in his third year at school [can't believe it] and the teachers still watch them as they leave. When he sees us he always has to go to his teacher and say he knows us. Mind you, I must admit that he looks very like one of his friends and both grannies have, for a split second got them mixed up . At his brothers nursery I have to use a pass word if I collect him.

My GSs' nursery had a password system, but I don't think their primary school goes that far.

And if a man can't remember what his grandaughter looks like he's going to be pretty clueless about a password.

Yes but the mother speaking to the teacher face to face would have made it clear which child was involved. Wouldn't it?

Most schools nowadays do have a 'going home book' where parents have to complete details if someone other than known parents are collecting.

My DDs always fill it in if I am picking up even though I am a Gov at the school and the staff know me well.

At grandsons' school the teacher has to be informed if anyone other than the parent is collecting a child. Commonsense really.

Headteacher must be going mad trying now to stop gaps you never dream of! So hard to anticipate for every possible scenario..I mean who would have thought it!

I did once have a child who when an unknown (to us) uncle came to collect him (mum had said her brother was coming) the child denied all knowledge of the chap! I had to phone his mum to double check! Poor bloke was so embarrassed!

I agree, absent! There is fault here on all sides, but it is still feels ludicrous.

If the teacher does not actually know the person collecting a child, then he/she should have to produce photo ID. It's not that difficult these days when driving licenses, which most people have, include photographs. Mind you if this grandfather had such poor sight that he couldn't tell that the child given into his care wasn't his granddaughter, presumably he wouldn't be driving. Passport ID?

In any case, you would have thought the grandfather would have said something along the lines of "I have come to collect Jane Smith to take her to her doctor's appointment. I am her grandfather." That way, Jane Jones would have stayed at school.

Yes, it is strange that the doctor prescribed paracetamol for her - why??

I don't think a 6-year old can be thick - just at risk from those around her.

The girl in question is apparently a very shy child and never met one of her grandads as he's dead. A child of six doesn't really know what dead means.

J08 I don't think it reflects badly on the parents of the girl who was taken - young children tend to do what teacher says.

A teacher hands her over and off she goes.

Just shows how vulnerable young children are.
