Nigella drug use

"Love of money is the root of all evil" - where have I heard that before? I may understand the effect of a luxury lifestyle on domestic staff but it does not excuse emulating it at the expense of others nor does it justify an attitude where having to live "in Battersea" is seen as a fate worse than death! You have to laugh at their sorry attitude when you consider that Battersea properties can change hands for millions. What planet are these benighted souls on?

On the face of it Nigella and Saatchi seem such successful people, yet the more detail that comes out the more they seem like a couple of incompetants who couldn't do anything without an array of employees to do the actual work for them.

Reading the report made me feel for her, she speaks of "intimate terrorism" (by Saatchi) and "a brilliant but brutal man".

John Diamond wrote a regular column when he was dying of cancer which was very moving and brutally honest. I remember feeling so sad for her and being horrified when she married Saatchi (bit like Jackie Kennedy).
I have never bought her books or used her recipes, but I have always felt sorry for her as I think she has had a difficult life.
I think her testimony today has been brave.

It certainly was.

Nigella must feel as though she is in the dock and not merely a witness.

Sorry , but don"t think you can compare Kennedy/Onnasis to Nigella/ Sattchi .
Totally ,totally different league .
Satchi might to wealthy but is a drop in the ocean compared to Onassis.
Nigella might be successful but compared to Jackie she is well , what can I say , THERE is ^NO comparison.

Why not? You can always compare and then contrast, picking out the differences.

I understand why Mamie says that, in fact I think it came up before and was discussed in the thread on the neck-grabbing incident.

Both had husbands who died young, both lived life in the public eye, even though Nigella's career had only just got going. Both had young children, both dependant on a glamorous image, both very photogenic so bound to attract media attention, both in need of substantial funds to maintain their lifestyle, both reluctant to remain alone for longer than necessary, both attractive to an older man whose ego needed the boost of a desirable, famous woman.

I automatically think of Jackie O when I see Nigella. I hope Nigella will carve herself out a very different future now. She has remained dignified and commands my respect for that.

Yes, Nigella has dealt with all the negative publicity very well. Her testimony today sounds to have been measured. I wish her luck and agree with others about the similarity with Jackie O.

DeeDaa I think you are unfair on both of them. Most people with high profile careers that are very time demanding employ a battery of staff to help them. The surprise in this case is that the domestic staff they employed, and the defendants do seem to have been employed mainly to run their private lives, were so unchecked on and unsupervised.

From the way Saatchi's chief accountant answered questions, he (Saatchi) is the kind of man that you do not bring queries and concerns to. You just hunker down and get on with the job you have been paid to do. The defendants were trusted employees and given too much leeway.

I'm not just picking them out FlicketyB I think the same thing is true of many people. Without "My people" speaking to "Your people" you feel that some of them would be completely lost. Watching the news tonight it just seemed very sad that two people, who seem on the surface to have all the things most people dream of, are reduced to parading their private lives in front of the entire country.

At various times there have been high profile people who say that they are determined not to be swallowed up by their celebrity/talent. Think Kate Winslet, or even the Duchess of Cambridge, gradually the need for domestic support, whether Granny as Nanny (D of C, Cherie Blair) or/and personal assistant (both), creeps on them, bit by bit their career takes over their lives.

For some the machine takes over the individual. It has come out in court what a difficult person, to put it mildly, Charles Saatchi would be to live with, even if the marriage was happy. I think all of us know what it is like when a relationship is fractured, how all encompassing it becomes, like a set of blinkers, while you struggle on trying to keep all the plates in the air. I can see in the circumstances how the principal becomes the client of the support system.

I don't feel sorry for either?!....

Nigella aint stupid she knew what she was getting into... she's articulate, bright, already financially independent.

Saatchi made his money in PR, he is'nt going to release press that is not partially or does have some truth in it. Obviously he is bitter and twisted, but it is true.... ooohhh...another celeb knocking back coke! am I surprised...nah!

Looking at the pictures of her in the paper , she is looking quite remarkable for a woman of her age .
Looks as though she might have had a LITTLE HELP !
