Sex cases in the news

Is it only me who is disconcerted by the accusations in these cases . I am the same age as the accusers/victims and I cannot help thinking back to those times in the 60's when age 15 girls chose to hang around with these guys. Ok they were kids but who was meant to be looking after them , I certainly would have been aware it was very risky situation to be exposed to given the 'Free love' climate at the time, why were they allowed to be alone , I'm sure many others around were complicit and tolerant .Also im absolutely positive it was completely widespread behaviour amongst 'groupies' so why deal with it in this way now, lurid and painful . I'm aware there are degrees of behaviour and rape and sexual exploitation is never acceptable.

I've now been reminded of the Paul Anka song, 'Diana' - which one of them is "so young"?

"Diana"

I'm so young and you're so old
This, my darling I've been told
I don't care just what they say
'Cause forever I will pray
You and I will be as free
As the birds up in the trees
Oh, please, stay by me, Diana

Thrills I get when you hold me close
Oh, my darling, you're the most
I love you but do you love me
Oh Diana, can't you see
I love you with all my heart
And I hope we will never part
Oh, please, stay with me, Diana

Oh my darlin', oh my lover
Tell me that there is no other
I love you with my heart
Oh-oh, oh-oh
Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh
Only you can take my heart
Only you can tear it apart
When you hold me in your loving arms
I can feel you giving all your charms
Hold me darling, ho-ho-hold me tight
Squeeze me baby with a-all your might
Oh, please, stay by me Diana

It's the singer of the song, surely - i.e. the man...?

Happy Birthday Sweet 16 by Neil Sedaka is another one ('Tonight's the night I've waited for...') hmm

A male friend had an affair with a married woman in her twenties when he was only 14. 'Diana' was their song.

What about Chantilly Lace?

When I was 16 (just in work) I was asked by a fellow worker who used be roadie for a very well known pop group if I wanted to go to a concert with him and meet the band, I was thrilled until he told me what would be expected of me shock I declined.

You can find anything on the internet these days, according to one of the websites it was written by Anka when he was 15 "about the crush he had on his sister's babysitter who was 5 years older". He released it by the time he was 16 "I was a precocious kid" he says.

Grannyknot Fri 17-Jan-14 17:21:37

'Chantilly Lace' was Jerry Lee Lewis - the man who married his 13 year old cousin (once removed).

Flowerofthewest Fri 17-Jan-14 17:21:40

Police and 'Don't Stand so Close To Me'

Roy Harper and 'Forbidden Fruit'

Both of these songs quite explicit regarding sexuality and young girls.

Ana Fri 17-Jan-14 17:27:31

I don't think Chantilly Lace mentions age at all, petallus.

A number of posters are referring to DJ's and groping, or 'consensual sex' with a minor.
I wouldn't want to confuse the very serious charges against Bill Roache and Rolf Harris, with the offences which DLT is charged with.
I am not minimising the impact of DLT's alleged offences on the girls and women who experienced his unacceptable behaviour, which seems to continue if what an Observer journalist said in after interviewing him last year.
Rolph Harris was found to have on his computer when he was arrested last year, numerous photographic images of infants and children being sexually abused.
The fact that Bill Roache's children are supporting him is no different than the way in Stuart Hall's children, and wife appeared at this side, throughout his trial.

Chantilly Lace and a pretty face
And a pony tail hangin' down,
A wiggle in her walk and a giggle in her talk,
They're gonna make the world go 'round

Ain't nothing in the world like a big eyed girl
To make me act so funny,
Make me spend my money.
Make me feel real loose like a long necked goose,
Like a - Wa baby that's what I like.

I think the age of the girl is implied since mature women don't usually go around wiggling and giggling and wearing hair in a pony tail.

Added to this it was sung by The Big Bopper who had a deep, masculine, predatory kind of voice.

I rest my case! smile

Ana Fri 17-Jan-14 17:43:07

Nothing to indicate she was underage though - lots of American teenagers and young women wore ponytails in the 50s/early 60s.

AlieOxon Fri 17-Jan-14 17:44:28

Oh God, what rubbish we grew up with!

JessM Fri 17-Jan-14 17:55:26

Well that kind of pop music was aimed at young teenaged girls wasn't it. Grooming by pop? Surely not. And we go on about the pop music industry and their disgraceful videos today. Plus Ca change...
Except today the women, like Cyrus, in pop are doing the grooming on the men's behalf. Neat trick chaps.
Oh and lets not forget that Lolita was a huge best seller in the 1960s.

Ana Fri 17-Jan-14 18:35:40

We were more innocent in those days though, weren't we? We may have fancied certain pop stars and even DJs, but it was all through a romantic haze - we imagined them falling in love with us, probably kissing passionately, but in my own mind it never went further than that...

Grannyknot Fri 17-Jan-14 18:46:05

You're right Ana it was all 'swooning and getting weak at the knees' but definitely not about the act of having sex.

Granny23 Fri 17-Jan-14 18:48:58

Ana I think SOME of us were more innocent, but others, myself included, were working, smoking, drinking and having 'dates' or steady boyfriends by the time we were 15. It was, in fact, the more innocent among us, who had a sheltered upbringing, who ended up either married with a baby at 16, or quietly having a secret abortion.

petallus Fri 17-Jan-14 19:16:51

Too right Granny23!

I had a steady boyfriend when I was 15.

petallus Fri 17-Jan-14 19:17:39

I went in pubs but I've never smoked.

whenim64 Fri 17-Jan-14 19:19:43

Petallus sorry, I've gone and lost the plot now! blush Been out, put the shopping away, went out again, brought the dog home and had my tea, fell asleep for 10 minutes and now so much has been written on here I've lost track of what I was banging on about. Not unusual for me! When I get a grip I'll come back. Apologies! smile

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 17-Jan-14 19:27:21

when. That is very honest! Love it. grin

NfkDumpling Fri 17-Jan-14 19:36:04

I feel sure that in a programme about the Stones several months ago - may even have been a year (time flies), they said that they had the pick of whichever girls they fancied after a concert. Where will it all stop?

Ana Fri 17-Jan-14 19:44:43

Having a steady boyfriend is one thing...being prepared to have sex with any or all the members of a pop group is quite another!

absent Fri 17-Jan-14 20:17:22

And roadies or, quite often so far as I understand, just roadies not the stars themselves.

petallus Fri 17-Jan-14 21:21:55

Well Ana when I was a young teenager my heart belonged only to Elvis (apart from boyfriend) and he was too far away for me to get at him!

petallus Fri 17-Jan-14 21:24:03

That's alright when.

Sometimes real life has to take precedence over GN. grin
