We get them here in Ipswich, Queensland. One local street quite near to me had a few homes demolished 'cos of sinkholes about 10 years ago. This was a mining area; the next suburb is called Ebbw Vale, but only about 10% of the tunnels were recorded on maps, 'cos the mining companies were taxed per mile of tunnel. So it is long forgotten corruption that allowed houses to be erected on our sinkholes.
When I'm digging the garden I sometimes fantasise than my spade will fall right down the hole I've dug. Hasn't happened yet, I'm glad to say!
