Sinkholes

We get them here in Ipswich, Queensland. One local street quite near to me had a few homes demolished 'cos of sinkholes about 10 years ago. This was a mining area; the next suburb is called Ebbw Vale, but only about 10% of the tunnels were recorded on maps, 'cos the mining companies were taxed per mile of tunnel. So it is long forgotten corruption that allowed houses to be erected on our sinkholes.

When I'm digging the garden I sometimes fantasise than my spade will fall right down the hole I've dug. Hasn't happened yet, I'm glad to say!

In Hertford, Hereford and Hampshire, hurricanes hardly ever happen. But they didn't say anything about the ground opening up beneath your feet!shock

Did you see that a big sink hole has opened up in a housing estate in Hertfordshire and another smaller one in the central reservation of the M2 motorway in Kent.

Apparently this weather has 'triggered' them.

Sinkholes only occur in certain areas of geology,*Aka*, so if you live in an area where sink holes are possible, you will probably know.

At the moment I am more bothered by the flood that seem to be engulfing our village again. The road outside the house is flooded and it looks as extensive as 2007. As soon as it is light I will walk out to see how far it extends. I hope and pray that none of the houses flooded in 2007 are flooded again. According to the EA maps we are about 30 foot from the flood zone so should be OK. The floods will need to rise about a metre to affect us.

Very scary - but also very rare (soothing voice).
Plenty of much more likely things to worry about grin
Which is why I was up at 5 a.m.

There are some very interesting sinkholes in Burnham Beeches not far from HW.

Yes, saw this on the news at lunchtime, very scary! What if the woman had been getting into the car, or out of it at the time?
