Shirley Temple

I loved the shirley temple films and had some records, did not like the ringlets they did hurt, but the ballet class seemed to like them

KatyK Just caught up with this thread and chuckling at 'The Shirley Temple' - wonderful piece of lateral thinking. DH loved it too.

My mother used to try to torture my hair into Shirley Temple ringlets with curling rags. She was unsuccessful!

KatyK - 'Politics' is putting it mildly... She was U.S. Ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia, and she also served as Chief of Protocol of the United States, 1976–1977.

I loved her films, I can hear her voice " on the good ship lollipop " so sweet. I was watching re-runs of course because I am not old enough to have seen them first time round.

Considering what a total mess she might have been after having been a successful child star in those days she has done amazingly well.
So many of our more recent child stars have ended up being totally screwed up.

Yes, she went on to be more than just a child star.

My mother wasn't a fan so I was spared her films which I would have found too sugary sweet. Watching clips on the news today I shudder at the way she was obviously exploited. I'm glad she found fulfilment in her adult life as that doesn't often happen when a child star grows up.

I always loved her films which were endearing and evoked feelings of a more innocent time. Some people probably find them corny in today's more cynical world, but my own children had the videos of 'Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm' and 'Heidi' which they watched repeatedly and enjoyed very much.
It should also be noted that she was a breast cancer survivor/ campaigner, a US ambassador, and a successful business-woman with seats on the board of several multi-national companies/organizations.

She was SO cute as a child. She went into politics didn't she? There is an area of Birmingham/Solihull called Shirley and there is an Indian restaurant there called The Shirley Temple. I always think of her little face when we go past it.
