Greenhouse gone!......

merlotgran you sound very much like me! (not telling DH things) I wouldn't have told him about my fencing being down as he moiders! but a kind neighbour came to tell me (more like came to tell me "your fence is down get it sorted before all waifs n strays start shortcutting through again)!!! gosh if DH knew half the things we didn't tell him he would pass out! he is not up to dramas and was bad enough when his greenhouse pane went

We were going to rebuild it this year, bikergran so I suppose it's not a big problem but we can't do anything until this awful weather is over.

DH doesn't go round the front very often - he's more of your back door sort of person but I noticed it as I was reversing out this morning. I haven't said anything yet because he's hobbling around on a scalded foot. He managed to knock over a boiling hot mug of coffee on Monday night!!

We also have to replace two lengths of guttering but I haven't told him about that either!

We'll send for the cavalry when the weather improves.

oh dear merlotgran has he not felt the draught! we have fences down 6ft ones tut!! and the big post tut! but consider myself very lucky.. lets hope this dratted weather decides to leave us all very soon..

Oh dear, bikergran - that's sounds expensive. We have been looking for a replacement greenhouse but there aren't many real ones to look at yet - just online. Better wait a couple of weeks I think - after the storms have died down. We'd had our perspex one 11 years so it didn't do too badly as we live on a fairly windy hill.

DH was jubilant that all the panes he replaced in the greenhouse last week were still there this morning.

He still hasn't noticed that half the front porch is missing!

rockgran sorry to hear you have lost your greenhouse.. we lost one pane in the winds about a month ago..Its a glass one..I went to buy another pane £4-00 and as I was putting it in it slipped out of my hand! and broke...had to go and get another but 1st glass place was closed so had to go to another £8-00 !! this time so cost me £12 for one pane..tut!! but DH was mortified.. his greenhouse is his baby! it survived last nights storm thankfully..as he has some Chrysanths due to arrive shortly. I have read reviews about the plastic Perspex ones and many to say that they are no good in wind.....I wish I had paid extra and got safety glass!! as DH not good on feet and GS cannot play in garden now. good luck with your new greenhouse.

I lost a few roof tiles last night, but some of my neighbours' ridge tiles have been ripped off by the gales. Fortunately, we knew a chap who would drop everything to come and fix them, before the next blast strips the entire roof. It seems to be that the older roofs, such as mine, are standing up better than the newer ones - can't think why.

Haven't been up the garden to inspect my greenhouse. I will go up the garden tomorrow in fear and trembling.

We've spent the morning clearing up and it has all gone to the tip now. We are going to get a more substantial one and set it back a bit. Should do the trick. Sounds easy when you write it down but I think it may be "a project" what with resiting paving, etc. I like the idea of netting to contain it, welshchrissy. Thanks everyone for your kind comments. ...these flowers are easier to produce!

We have a very lightweight plastic greenhouse that is just a sheet of plastic over a frame, held down by being tied to a fence, and to my amazement, it's still standing and in one piece. I fully expected to see it flying off down the street, it's obviously tied down better than I thought.

We did have a fence panel blown down, but are very thankful that this is the only damage we've suffered. How those poor people who have been flooded for so long are coping is truly beyond me. I do hope it all starts to improve for them soon.

Sorry to hear of the damage - what a gale that was.

My greenhouse (glass) used to lose a few panes every winter until I started leaving the door open. The wind had been getting in through the tiny gaps and pushing its way out through the glass. The open door gave it a way out.

But the winter before last, I forgot that the aluminium incinerator bin stood upwind from the greenhouse. It blew across and went through three panes.

My neighbours shed is in pieces again in the back garden,he has one of those heavy plastic ones where he keeps his bicycle & garden furniture everything blown across the gardens this is the 3rd time he has had to fix it together again in a matter of weeks.When coming home from the Charity Shop yesterday we had locked the doors and where waiting to cross the Road when a massive gust of wind blew my friend into the path of a passing car I just managed to grab her arm to steady her it was really frightening.

Have the same problem with a perspex greenhouse. Panels fly off in high winds. We put garden netting over the greenhouse mainly to collect the panels when they flew out but it seem to disperse the wind and they are not as likely to come out in the first place. Hurricane last night but only one panel on garden and 2 in greenhouse. Worth a try garden netting is very cheap

IN the gales of 70 something (the one with Michael Fish, you know! It's just that I can't remember the exact year) well anyway, our tractor shed sort of disappeared, well, it actually ended up distributed across neighbours fields.

Ours is beyond repair but DH has come home now and we are planning a new one. At least we hadn't started planting yet. Hope everyone else is safe.

We have a 70' long greenhouse. It's still standing but it's going to be a big job to replace the broken panes. Some of them are hanging half way out of their frames and with a bit of luck will be easy to shove back in but DH is on Warfarin so there's no way I'm going to let him anywhere near broken glass!!!

No point in worrying about it at the moment.

The little greenhouse has just had panes replaced so fingers crossed.

In the storms a few years ago, I was standing at the kitchen window watching the trees bend over to fortyfive degrees when I saw the garage roof angle up towards me, rise into the air and cartwheel off to land in next door's garden, clipping the conservatory on the way past. It lay there on its back, with the lightbulb still hanging on its flex, unbroken.
