Here's an interesting blog by Jon Snow. He says what I have been saying - that Westminster politicians just don't understand the Scots and that the NO campaign is focusing almost entirely on negatives.

Might be best not to remind Ireland that it was formerly part of the UK in that way.

Aka - what a suggestion!! Almost certain to get floating voters charging to the ballot box to vote yes!

I am very sad today as there is a very aggressive picture of a Yes gentleman, compete with the blue yes hat on and his middle finger up, on the front page of The Times, Scotland edition.
I am sure there are aggressive "Nos" and I would be equally sad about that.
I do wish the press would butt out.
All this makes me quite frightened and I live in a sleepy little village in middle Scotland.

Driving around the Scottish Countryside last week we saw some No signs (there are far less of them that the ubiquitous Yes ones). They were in the middle of fields so the Yes people couldn't graffiti them- what I liked was the phrase used on them: " We are delighted to be united". A nice, accurate (for me anyway) positive statement. Gaun yersels the No campaign!

The S.O. says that an MP [don't know his name] was going round Scotland recently campaigning for the 'No' side and had to give up because he was being pelted with eggs everywhere he went sad. I saw a lot of the Yes/No signs in fields when I was there the other week; it really upset me to see them.

penguinpaperback Sat 06-Sept-14 10:43:09

Yes I read about the MP Tegan his picture is in this link which also mentions a couple now moving back to England.

Whatever the result how are the two sides ever going to live in harmony after all this?

Five reasons NOT to vote yes, and five reasons to vote no by Prof Adam Tomkins who teaches constitutional law at Glasgow Uni—"The Tomkins Ten"

What will they think up next?

My DD and family live in Argyll and Bute as her DH used to be in the R.N. My DGC are settled in school there and my DD likes the school system better in Scotland. After much consideration she has decided to vote YES in the referendum. I have argued the case for "better together", but have had no success in changing her mind. She loves Scotland, and wants to make it her permanent home. She lives in a rural area and has been welcomed by her neighbours and accepted into the community. When I visited recently there were no placards of either side displayed anywhere around.

It's not long now to the day of polling by the people of Scotland on their wishes for the future. I hope they are happy with the outcome. In one way I hope it's a Yes and the UK government makes no agreements and off Scotland sails into its green and pleasant future. Remembering that the grass is not greener always in the new field!
If the vote is No the Scottish parliament will push for more and more power and devolution until it's independent in all but name. I also fear that A FEW in the Yes campaigners would be sore losers.
As a person living in England with no say what so ever with regards the outcome I feel very much that Scotland wants to be divorced from the rest of the UK. That somehow those of us south of the border are not worthy of being in the same club and are disenfranchised as valueless.
I am very sad and feel we are too small an island to be separated.

Aka Sun 07-Sept-14 07:11:04

Bitter?

NfkDumpling Sun 07-Sept-14 07:28:34

Much as I hope for a No win and hate the idea of Scotland leaving the UK, the benefits for the rest of us are beginning to grow on me!

Brendawymms Sun 07-Sept-14 08:48:14

There are border posts between Northern Ireland and Eire so there is no reason why there would not be border posts between England and an Independent Scotland. There is a bit of fuss about this in the paper today but why not people would be crossing between two countries.
Yes Aka perhaps I am bitter. England is as much affected by this vote as Scotland but we have no say in it.

Brendawymms Sun 07-Sept-14 09:04:55

If after independence if we buy a Haggis in Edinburgh will we have to declare it at customs when we return to England. grin ?

Agus Sun 07-Sept-14 09:18:24

McSween sell their Haggis worldwide so you would be able to buy it online Brenda grin

I think there is a folk tale which runs like this - A farmer had 7 sons and a farm. The sons wanted to him to divide his farm among the seven of them. He took 7 sticks and tied them together then handed the bundle to each of his sons in turn and asked thm to break the bundle of sticks. They each took a turn and none could break the bundle of sticks. He then separated the sticks and handed one to each of his sons and said,'' Now break the sticks!'' And they did. Nuff said. (Hope no one else has posted this story - hadn't time to read 13 pages of discussion.)

Jane10 Sun 07-Sept-14 09:44:52

Please be assured that many people in Scotland most certainly do not want independence. It all depends on who you speak to. NO voters (and there are plenty of them but they are not so aggressively vociferous) see the sheer daftness of what Salmond and co are promising- and these are pretty empty promises. Scotland will still be Scotland if it votes to remain united with the UK. I do agree with Brendawymms that in the event of a No vote winning the day that the politicians will be pushing for more and more concessions which will cause resentment from the other UK countries. As a Scot that will cause me much embarrassment and I apologise in advance should that occur. I am not joking here BTW. I also agree that the YES brigade will be very sore losers and much unpleasantness will result. It will end up having cost millions of pounds that could be much better spent. This stupid pride has led to such suffering over the years. Have we learned nothing from history? Tchach!! Am too annoyed to write more. Boy oh boy will I be a sore loser if those YES idiots prevail.
