Rape in prison

Norway's high living standards are reflected in some of their prisons, but there are still some old-fashioned prisons in existence. Same in the Netherlands. The proof is there, though - treating prisoners humanely and intervening by rehabilitation is more effective in preventing recidivism. Some prisoners are not amenable to educative attempts to lower their risk to the public, whatever country they live in, but I agree it's right to treat them in a civilised manner and if they are going to be deprived of their liberty, allow them some comforts. The prison walls and loss of freedom are the punishment.

The Norwegian prison system is regarded by many as a 'cushy number' - and yet their recidivism rate is enviable at only 20%. Not treating criminals like animals has a benefit for society in both economic and social terms, but is regarded as soft justice by many.

The whole idea of the prison system is so unnatural and appalling. I wish there were better alternatives.
At least being banished to the Russian steppes or Australia or French Guiana meant you had a chance of creating an alternative lifestyle.
Sounds like Grayling is hiding his head in the sand.

Grayling needs to resolve whatever 'problem' is causing him to block this research and do something to support the Howard League's Commission. In America they are (at last) tackling these issues - I can't believe we're lagging behind in the UK.

How can we call,ourselves a civilised society when assaults against vulnerable people are being covered up and knowingly allowed. It's sickening.

Shocking. Must think there is something to hide. And we are less than a year from an election now so that is going to affect decisions.

I can't believe that this is happening. The Howard League started their 2 year research project 2 years ago next month and should be completing it now.

Sexual assault in prisons is rife, not just prisoner on prisoner, but from staff, too. The consensual issue has never made progress, either. Don't provide condoms so they can't have sex is the practice in many prisons! Prisoners are supposed to be able to see medical staff and obtain condoms in privacy, but this often gets blocked.

I have seen bruises and shoe prints on the bodies of prisoners and newly-released parolees, who have complained and received compensation, so ir's obvious that the assault problem is admitted. Why pretend sexual assaults aren't a big problem, too? I expect there'll be a petition for this to be discussed in parliament, and would urge everyone to sign - many of the victims of prison sexual assault are young, mentally ill, vulnerable, unable to defend themselves.
