Other posters have talked about the dangers of the discussions that are taking place (which have received almost no coverage and which many people are consequently unaware of) regarding the TTIP Agreement. 38 Degrees is seeking support to mount a campaign to challenge these negotiations on behalf of the millions of ordinary people who are likely to be affected by the unprecedented powers that may be granted to corporations. 38 Degrees states that:

"Right now, officials in the US and EU are secretly negotiating a hugely influential and dangerous trade deal which would put the profits of big business ahead of our welfare, health and environment.

It’s called the “Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership”, or “TTIP” for short, but in reality it’s more like a Christmas-list for big business. The negotiations are shrouded in secrecy, but leaked details suggest the deal will:

- Allow companies to sue governments if they make decisions which negatively affect big business’ potential profits (like capping energy prices, or introducing plain packet cigarettes.)"

The implications of this are quite frightening. Large corporations have the financial clout to hire huge legal teams to mount proceedings against governments, which do not have unlimited amounts of money to defend themselves against such claims. The business world's priority is to maximise profits and it has proved to be unscrupulous in riding roughshod over the rights of ordinary people in achieving this.

If you are concerned about what is happening, please consider supporting the proposition to mount a campaign.

Doomed! We're all doomed!

thatbags Sun 21-Feb-16 08:28:40

Oh, look! Nick Clegg's in favour of TTIP too (p14).

thatbags Sun 21-Feb-16 08:14:14

They do say that US Democrats are the equivalent of British Tories. Hey ho.

thatbags Sun 21-Feb-16 08:05:03

Doesn't put Obama in a good light, does it? If a Democrat President can introduce such a thing, what the heck would a Republican introduce?

thatbags Sun 21-Feb-16 07:59:47

One of the main arguments for voting out (Brexit) is that our democratic rights have less oomph within the EU because the EU is an undemocratic bureaucratic body, rather than a body of democratically elected representatives.

thatbags Sun 21-Feb-16 07:57:56

And the first sentence of the executive summary in that WoW document says it is exactly that: a treaty being negotiated between the EU and the USA.

Interesting point, nfk.

A 42 page report by War on Want. Lots of detail in it.

You've got it right, Gracesgran.
On our own we would have no chance to stop TTIP and ISDS.

With the EU we do at least have a chance to save the NHS and other important things from TTIP.

Are the TTIP talks only with the EU, or are there talks independently with our government? (In which case our MPs won't be involved.) Is it only our MEPs who are against it or is there opposition from other EU members? And wouldn't we have a better chance of fighting it outside the EU when British needs can be independently negotiated? On past records British views seem to be pretty much ignored b the other member states, whatever Mr C claims.

durhamjen Sat 20-Feb-16 22:28:17

It is, bags. However, TTIP and ISDS is something else. Please read about it.

grannyactivist Sat 20-Feb-16 21:56:00

bags TTIP is not only a threat to the NHS, but challenges the democratic process by allowing companies to fine governments for passing laws that reduce company profits.

thatbags Sat 20-Feb-16 19:44:44

I thought you (and a lot of other people, including me) thought the NHS was "open to plunder" already, dj, with or without TTIP.

Indinana Sat 20-Feb-16 19:41:40

Already signed this.

Lots of other links on here, Gracesgran.

Other governments have had to bow to the pressure of trade with the US and I wonder why we would not have to Jen. I wonder if we may not get a better deal with 28 countries than with one although I have no idea really.

durhamjen Sat 20-Feb-16 18:52:31

According to emails I receive from my MEPs, there is a large group of MEPs who do not want TTIP. They are the only ones who are protecting the NHS from TTIP.
If we leave the EU, we will get TTIP without safeguards and the NHS will be open to plunder.
We will definitely get GM here because Monsanto will sue the government for affecting their profits by not allowing them to grow GM in the UK.

Lots of other stuff like that, too, Gracesgran.

Gracesgran Sat 20-Feb-16 17:41:33

As far as I can see, in or out of the EU the US would want a TTIP agreement with us in order to trade with them. Can anyone tell me why it would be different if we were to vote in or out?

durhamjen Wed 01-Oct-14 00:01:13

This is what is happening now between the EU and Canada. The worrying thing is that these talks are all so secret. If there is nothing for us to worry our little heads about, why are they not in the open?

Signed, and made a small donation. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. Things like TTIP agreement with their bland sounding titles pass us all by as they sound so boring and insignificant.

nannyfran Thu 18-Sept-14 11:00:26

Thank you for that, Grannyknot, I hadn't realised the full implications until watching. I agree, very scary!
Yesterday I signed a 38degrees petition For Ed Milliband which is relevant to the subject, but it is easy for the government to slip in all sorts of controversial legislation with so many other headline stories in play at present. How to make the public aware of the dangers to the NHS is a problem.

Grannyknot Thu 18-Sept-14 10:20:52

Not sure whether this YouTube has been posted previously, but for the first time I understood the issue. Scary.

Seems to have disappeared from the news.
The government is lying when it says the NHS is safe.
