Kate's First Official Portrait

Well, I have to say that the portrait of Kate reminded me more of a long-haired Edwina Curry. It makes Kate look like someone in her late thirties/early forties and a very tired one at that! Kate always comes across as a young, vibrant person - in that portrait she just looks jaded and heavy eyed.

Comparing the two photos in your link Ana - one looks like the mother or much older sister and the other looks like Kate!

I know it's difficult to capture accurately in oils so I suppose the trick is to choose your artist wisely - this one, imo, would be worth every penny as the woman is instantly recognisable: fineartamerica.com/featured/bette-davis-eyes-joan-butler-gore.html

As is this one: fineartamerica.com/featured/elizabeth-joan-butler-gore.html

I saw the painting a few months ago at the National Portrait Gallery and liked it a lot. It is not superficially glamorous but I thought it expressed something 'deeper' though I wasn't sure what.

Here's one Kate and William do apparently like!

[[http://www.komonews.com/news/entertainment/Critics-divided-over-Duchess-of-Cambridge-portrait-186531521.html Here it is in colour. Better than the monochrome representations.

Not such a wide smile as in some of the photographs, but the eyes are smiling. A good likeness.

Is there a coloured version to be seen? It might not look quite as dark.

merlotgran Sun 08-Jun-14 10:33:44

It makes her look old.

Agus Sun 08-Jun-14 09:45:58

I think it is too dark and actually quite dull.

Mishap Sun 08-Jun-14 09:45:06

She looks a bit scary!

Anniebach Sun 08-Jun-14 09:27:54

I like it,

Elegran Sun 08-Jun-14 09:23:33

That was over a year ago (I was alerted to this by the "The duchess, 31, whose pregnancy was announced by the Royal Family last month". Thought I had missed that the spare was under construction.)

The portrait can't have been publicised very well, I had never heard of it.

ninathenana Sun 08-Jun-14 09:10:40

I hope it's not as dark as it appears there. Not a bad likeness though.

The first official painting of the Duchess of Cambridge has been unveiled to mixed reviews from critics.

What do you think?
