This is funny. Apparently there's a Facebook page full of these comments. I want to know whether the woman overheard in the nearby Wilmslow Waitrose was a Gransnetter. grin

Pittcity Is ironing essential? I'm going to be in real trouble if it is!

You're safe in Scotland Agus but if you venture down here beware of Wentworth when there's a big match on - the jams spread for miles, even Ascot isn't as bad. And, of course, someone rushing to see the golf in their mammoth 4X4 is SO much more important than some poor peasant trying to get to work. (Not sure DD would be impressed by being described as a poor peasant hmm

Agus Tue 29-Jul-14 13:48:37

Deedaa, I live in Scotland smile. I do know of Ascot of course but Sunningdale and Wentworth Golf Course, afraid not but I get the picture, to be avoided grin

Pittcity Tue 29-Jul-14 12:53:23

Maggiemaybe I don't think ironing water is posh, but is it essential?

Deedaa Mon 28-Jul-14 23:27:59

Agus Ithink you're all right if you nip in and out quickly and don't make eye contact grin

If you were properly posh you'd know that Sunningdale is just down the road from Wentworth Golf Course and, of course, Ascot is just round the corner. Well where else would you take your Waitrose picnic? grin grin grin

Maggiemaybe Mon 28-Jul-14 22:37:30

Blimey, I must be a little bit posh after all, as I've used ironing water for years! Not that I iron much, so it's not a huge expense. smile Granted it's Sainsburys - and the look of it is spoilt by the big label I always stick on that says Not a Drink! The bottles are too similar to my flavoured water ones for my liking and I'm getting on a bit and easily confused.

janerowena Mon 28-Jul-14 19:58:58

Pittcity grin

I can still remember the first time one of my sisters bought me a bottle of something similar years ago - I was dumbfounded!

Lona Mon 28-Jul-14 17:58:44

Cari Thank you for your concern, I used to be extremely intolerant to almost everything, but I'm now almost normal! wink
However, I still stick to gf bread and rice/coconut milk most of the time, just in case [fingers crossed]

I can even have a small wine now and again [jumps up and down with excitement]

Thanks anyway.

Lona

Parking at Waitrose is free for two hours which is very handy, but I also buy my special milks and gf bread there.
I do like a rummage in the reduced section, and don't forget 8 choc ices for £1!

Lona - I'm sure you know this anyway but (having spotted the GF reference) Waitrose own brand choc ices (milk choc) contain wheat. Ditto their cooked chickens sad

Pittcity Mon 28-Jul-14 10:00:19

Just spotted this one on Facebook.

Agus Mon 28-Jul-14 08:49:19

Phew, that's a relief Deedaa

I don't have a Doctorate but I am a former Nurse. Would they let me in for some milk? grin

Oh, and I have Farrow and Ball in a couple of rooms. The only problem is, I haven't a clue where Sunningdale is confused

Purpledaffodil Mon 28-Jul-14 08:15:59

I only go to Sunningdale for the Farrow and Ball shop. At least I can then go into Waitrose with my posh F and B carrier bag as proof of fitness to entersmile I only have Postgraduate education Deedaa, so I need supporting evidence grin

Deedaa Sun 27-Jul-14 20:05:39

Agus shopping at Waitrose doesn't make you posh, but shopping in the Sunningdale branch definitely does grin I think they only let DD in because she has a doctorate !!!

janerowena Sun 27-Jul-14 15:01:40

I had been wondering whether to mention this but seeing that bit about your car - well, pretty dreadful I think, but DS has a friend with very wealthy parents who live about 40 mins north of us, almost an hour to get into Bury St.Edmunds, but she drives in to do all her shopping there rather than the nearer shops. Then she leaves her car parked there all day and goes shopping and to the cinema or lunch. Which may not mean much to many of you, but they only give you 2 free hours (and you have to spend over £20) in that carpark and after that it is £25 for the day. She used to want to meet me for coffee and couldn't understand why I parked in Rams Meadow for under £3.

We have a small Waitrose and a Sainsbury's near us. Waitrose is our first choice because it's small and you don't have to go on a twenty mile hike to find a pint of milk! I'm not sure whether we're worthy of Waitrose as we only have a teeny weeny Mr Men car confused

Nelliemoser Sun 27-Jul-14 07:46:35

I have to say Waitrose and M&S aim their products at the poshluxury end of the market and do stock niche products, but I cannot believe that the basic goods are any better than anywhere else, or worth paying any more for. ASDA yogurts are made by Yeo valley.

M&S in Crewe a town that suffered major financial decline after the closure of the British Rail and Rolls Royce car works has a food section that seems to pump out the smell of fresh butter croissants as you walk through the food hall.

I cannot imagine Waitrose would do well there. They have Asda, Aldi Morrisons and Tescos.

Asda seem to pump out hot cross bun smells into their car park.

kittylester Sun 27-Jul-14 06:50:44

We have M&S in Loughborough but the council keep blocking Waitrose confused

durhamjen Sat 26-Jul-14 22:24:36

Stansgran, have you checked to see if Waitrose in Hexham delivers to your postcode? It does to mine.

Mamie Sat 26-Jul-14 18:55:20

I think Waitrose is the thing I miss most about England after the family. It is always our last stop before we get on the ferry....

suzied Sat 26-Jul-14 18:53:19

I once heard middle class folk in Lidl, obviously on their first visit, exclaiming, " oh my God, they even do prosecco!"

granjura Sat 26-Jul-14 18:34:29

Would love an M&S in Market Harborough smile- where we visit often. At least in Melton Mowbray you can buy very posh pork pies.

Charleygirl Sat 26-Jul-14 18:18:42

I was in Waitrose today having my free cup of coffee and the man at the table close by was speaking to his wife at the top of his voice about the "new" house they have recently moved to and wanted to know whether to have the study up or downstairs, stating either room is large enough to hold a library table, and we all could understand how large it was as his arms were fully extended.

J52 Sat 26-Jul-14 18:08:16

Good to hear they are opening a M&S in Oakham and Melton. I bet they wished they had not shut the one in Market Harbrough! Especially now Waitrose is there! X

HildaW Sat 26-Jul-14 17:45:34

Oh I remember the Sunningdale Waitrose, when I was starting my little PT job at the Waitrose that was opening in Abingdon....we all got 'bussed' their for our training....posh hardly covers it....I actually served Royalty...well a housekeeper with an account!

My most memorable Waitrose saying was one overheard in the fruit and veg dept at the last Christmas I worked there (10 years ago at least)....some poor woman, obviously at the end of her tether, had a full blown hissy fit and yelled at a manager that Waitrose had ruined her Christmas.....the crime was to have run out of Organic celeriac.

Agus Sat 26-Jul-14 17:19:30

Well, you learn something new every day. The fact that I shop at Waitrose means I am POSH!! I do have one saving grace though, I drive my 4x4 extremely well grin

Deedaa Sat 26-Jul-14 17:18:15

Our Aldi is very much busier than it was a couple of years ago. No where to park and the trolleys have all been taken if you can. And a lot of the customers look very comfortably off.

Overheard by DD in Sunningdale Waitrose (Where the VERY posh people shop!) " Oh my God the children will be home this week and I'll have them all summer!" This was a week before the state schools broke up so obviously at boarding school and mother will now have to try and remember their names and bribe the Au pair to take them out grin
