I suppose this isn't stupid anti-semitism either?

People boycotted South African goods when the blacks of SA said it would help. That above isn't a boycott.

jingle On the one hand you say it was a mistake getting rid of Saddam Hussein and yet you wanted the US/UK to get rid of Assad.

As I understand it, ISIS is a combination of Syrian and Iraqi rebels. On 15 February, Time magazine reported:

"Arab backers of the Syrian opposition are stepping up their military support for the rebels, providing the beleaguered forces with more sophisticated anti-aircraft weaponry in the wake of a second round of inconclusive talks with the Syrian regime.

The Wall Street Journal, citing an unnamed Arab diplomat and opposition sources, said that Saudi Arabia would give the Syrian opposition Chinese man-portable air defense systems, or Manpads, and antitank guided missiles from Russia. The U.S. has opposed that kind of military support out of fear that the weapons could fall into the hands of terrorists or al-Qaeda affiliates.

The new aid is being delivered directly to the more moderate Free Syrian Army in the south of Syria, which has been launching an offensive against government forces since January. Meanwhile, the U.S. has increased its financial support of the rebels, paying million of dollars for the fighters’ salaries."

So it appears that the original arming of the rebels came from the US's close ally, Saudi Arabia, and, despite worries about such assistance falling into the wrong hands, substantial funding was provided by the US in an attempt to defeat Assad. It seems that providing weapons and money to "carefully selected" rebel groups (as the article described them - not quite sure what criteria for selection they used) was probably not a good idea.

this article?

Is he really saying we should excuse the Israelis because of past wrongs done to them? Surely not!

If anyone wishes to think further about the subject of the OP, there is an article in the Guardian by Owen Jones on the subject and a reply to that by Douglas Murray in the Spectator. IMO Murray has a certain (writing) class that Jones lacks.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 11-Aug-14 22:14:43

I've wandered a bit off the original subject. Sorry.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 11-Aug-14 22:13:31

I think the West should put "boots on the ground" against the IS. We started it all off by getting rid of Saddam Hussein.

We should have intervened forcefully in Syria too.

I think it's our fault. It was under control before.

janeainsworth Mon 11-Aug-14 22:12:47

Jings If GNHQ had let it stand they could have been considered to have condoned the incitement of religious hatred.

Elegran Mon 11-Aug-14 22:03:34

Jings It was a blanket statement in very strong terms. I don't think I am breaking any forum guidelines by saying that.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 11-Aug-14 21:53:51

merlot I'll get me coat. grin

GrannyTwice Mon 11-Aug-14 21:52:37

Oh I dang know about common entrance merlot but if you want to,post on some topics a bit of knowledge goes a long way

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 11-Aug-14 21:52:24

But of course, we don't know what the post said. Because it upset some poster, or HQr, who is more important than the rest of us.

merlotgran Mon 11-Aug-14 21:50:18

Maybe people applying to join Gransnet should pass a common entrance exam.

GrannyTwice Mon 11-Aug-14 21:50:17

It wasn't jingle.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 11-Aug-14 21:49:31

I can only guess what the deleted post said, but if it was criticising Islamists for their treatment of Christians, at the present time that could be considered understandable.

GrannyTwice Mon 11-Aug-14 21:48:21

Of course everyone is entitled to an opinion and if someone can't distinguish between the words Islam and Islam extremism then I'm entitled to call that intellectual rubbish because it is

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 11-Aug-14 21:46:20

Oh! What's the point in posting anything on here?!

We're not bloody school-kids! hmm Every word got to be censored. hmm

Elegran Mon 11-Aug-14 21:36:24

Wrong thread.

Elegran Mon 11-Aug-14 21:35:44

Overlocker - a key turned twice for deadlock

merlotgran Mon 11-Aug-14 21:33:07

Intellectual rubbish?

Surely ignoring an opinion you disagree with is better than having it wiped out even if the facts are incorrect.

Isn't everyone entitled to an opinion on here even if it's misguided? hmm

GrannyTwice Mon 11-Aug-14 21:27:49

I posted my criticism because T's post was much worse than provocative and unpleasant - it was intellectual rubbish - you simply cannot conflate Islam and Islam extremism. Whether it broke guidelines or not I can't say but a UKIP councillor resigned after making the same analogy and I don't actually think that the fundemental wing of any religion can claim any moral high ground.

merlotgran Mon 11-Aug-14 20:44:53

I read Tinkerbell's post which I'm sure was intended to be provocative but is it right for it to have been reported and deleted?

It was an unpleasant post but I can't see how it broke forum guidelines.

GrannyTwice Mon 11-Aug-14 20:36:53

X posts with deletion but you get my drift ....

GrannyTwice Mon 11-Aug-14 20:35:42

Tinkerbell - is there a conceptual difference in your mind between Islam and Islam extremists? Do you actually mean Islam fundamentalists ? Or do you not know what you mean at all because you are just so prejudiced ? Israelis just want to be left in peace ? Have you any idea of the terrorism that led to the establishment of Israel? Of the land grabbing that had occurred since? Of Palestinian children in jail? And wow, Christianity has been such a force for good - look at Central and South America and the RC church, look at the role of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa , look at the role of the Church in the Southern States of America blessing segregation and an example this week of the power of the church in Ireland which wants to continue making the state refuse abortions to girls pregnant because of rape or incest.
