I'm not sure why the question was asked but personally I do think it is important that they know the difference (and the difference in this case is huge) as they are the ones who are setting the rules for those who live in the countryside and make their living there. I am of the opinion that too many people think that the magazine 'Country Living' is what it is all about when nothing could be further from the truth.

Yes, maybe,if she/he had a role that required the knowledge, say works for DEFRA. Even then it is very easy to know the difference but slip up when communicating.

Why does it make a difference if it is an MP or member of the public who does not know the difference?. I can't help but think of other words that get mixed/muddle such as blood splatter/spatter, restaurateur/restauranter.

Has something happened I have missed or is this simply a general question. confused
