Although Gaza is no longer being bombed, the plight of the Palestinians continues. In The I yesterday it was reported that the Foreign Secretary has accused Israel of damaging the chances for peace by approving the building of 2,610 new homes in Givat Hamatos. He added that settlements are illegal under international law. Obama has also expressed "deep concern" about Israel's actions.
Unfortunately, "deep concern" isn't really that useful. Yet again, such words of condemnation don't count for much when financial and military support continues to be given.
It is hard not to form the opinion that Israel - whilst professing to want peace - has no desire to or intention of negotiating with the Palestinians towards a fair and peaceful settlement, and is being deliberately provocative in order to scupper any such talks.
