Sounds like an ideal model. We're going to have to develop smarter forms of care provision for older people. A blend of support yet a degree of independence for those that want it.

Do we need three threads for this personally I think its about time we moved to a better model of care and support than traditional care homes and I have worked and managed many. My mother in law at 101 lives in an extra care facility which means she has her own flat, her own front door, there is a daily lunch provided but not compulsory and she has her own care and cleaning staff come in at times she has decided on. Communal activities are aid on but you don't have to participate. Funding is via her pension, what used to be called Supporting People payment which covered the rent not sure what its called now and Attendance Allowance. Her facility is provided by Genesis Housing Association - it all works very well and people some of whom are very frailphysically dependant are happy there.

Please support us in Ceredigion in West Wales. Our Council is seeking to close residential homes or pass them to private providers to save money. The Council run homes are very good and provide excellent care for people who have been disabled by stroke, arthritis, polio and mild memory problems but are not in need of dementia care. The Council is considering replacing the current provision with extra care flats (they can get a grant for that from the Welsh government) and dementia beds. We accept that such places are needed but they do not suit the sort of elderly person who has remained acute and intelligent but cannot physically look after themselves. We need to keep our care homes too.
