Quite rightly he's being suspended but should the BBC be cancelling episodes of Top Gear?

If a man working in a factory punches a colleague he would probably be sacked but I doubt they'd remove the product he was making from the shelves.

I agree, he's a total a******.
'Juvenile humour''? He's offensive and thinks he's untouchable IMO
If over three quarters of a million think he needs reinstating, then I despair.

I think those who say that the persona JC presents on TV is just an act, his comments are not really meant but are just made for humorous effect are wrong.

He is well known for his dislike of speeding laws and "health and safety" and some time ago was photographed driving one-handed at 70mph on the motorway whilst speaking on his mobile. Astonishingly he only received a letter of warning not to do it again from the police, as they claimed there was "not enough evidence" to take it to Court.

While in Australia he tweeted saying what a wonderful time he was having driving along with "beer in cupholder".

I knew the term "slope" was racist - I've heard it used in old American war films - and I'm surprised so many people appear not to have heard it before. Why was the comment made about there being a "a slope on it" unless it was poking fun at the Asian man at the far end of the bridge - there was no other reason to make a remark about something so uninteresting.

He's a multi-millionaire and has friends in high places so he's got away with a lot more than most people would. Unfortunately, even if they sack him, there is always a market for the sort of nasty juvenile "humour" that he peddles.

Very interesting article, thanks merlot.

(love the 'Goodness knows what he's going to do if he ever loses his looks' comment!)

If you have a sense of irony have a look at this petition.

(I don't mind if you're not smile)

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 12-Mar-15 18:10:16

Noel Edmonds had some interesting things to say about it

soontobe Thu 12-Mar-15 18:07:21

Depends what you mean by "affected"

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 12-Mar-15 18:04:35

My younger grandson loves watching Top Gear. Aged 9. (The Christmas ones were much enjoyed))

merlotgran Thu 12-Mar-15 17:43:05

soontobe How many programmes on TV including soaps and regular dramas like Call The Midwife occasionally have a message at the end beginning, 'If you are affected by this programe.........'

Is anyone really likely to be affected by an episode of Top Gear? confused

Ariadne Thu 12-Mar-15 17:30:44

confused

Ana Thu 12-Mar-15 17:29:38

soontobe! smile

soontobe Thu 12-Mar-15 17:26:18

So he doesnt mean anything he says or writes. And his programmes have no effect on anyone either.

Ceesnan Thu 12-Mar-15 15:30:37

merlotgran thank you, was just going to say that, but you beat me to it.

merlotgran Thu 12-Mar-15 15:16:27

And for those on here who are concerned about speed. I am a bit of a petrol head and I've always thought that ignorance and lack of experience causes accidents, not watching programmes involving fast cars.

Jane10 Thu 12-Mar-15 15:15:32

I had said that I was joking in my previous post as, judging by other responses, it was unclear whether or not some of the Grans could tell what was intended to be funny grin

merlotgran Thu 12-Mar-15 15:13:34

I can't see a problem with children watching TG. All four of my grandsons have loved it but I think only the youngest (11) watches it now as it's something the others have grown out of.

I can remember hearing hoots of laughter from the two DGSs that used to come for tea after school. They were watching a repeat of the TG three trying to get across the channel in old cars that had been converted into pretty hopeless boats.

All good clean fun. No sex, no violence and no swearing.

GrannyTwice Thu 12-Mar-15 15:05:59

What on earth is DC doing weighing in? And his children would be heartbroken if the show goes? I'd be heartbroken that they watched it.

marigold1 Thu 12-Mar-15 14:43:43

At the end of the day this all boils down to an alleged punch from JC to a producer of the programme, that is unforgivable, he (JC) seems to have thrown a massive tantrum that no hot food was available when he decided to leave the pub three hours late (if press reports are to be believed).
As I have said before JC has brought this on himself, perhaps he can explain to the fans why the programme will not be shown.

I too find the man obnoxious etc.etc. I just switch off, used to enjoy TG, but now find it boring!

As Mark Twain said "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story" though thatbags grin

thatbags Thu 12-Mar-15 14:31:18

Begging your pardon, anya, my last post was intended as an apology. I'm sorry it was so open to misinterpretation that you missed that. Why would I have added a smile if I wasn't trying to be friendly?

Which kinda proves my point about people misinterpreting Clarkson's mucking about on Top Gear. That's what it is: mucking about, arsing around, being daft, even entertaining if TG's popularity is anything to go by, while occasionally making a sound point or two about car related stuff. The arsing around doesn't appeal to me much but I think it's harmless.

Hitting someone is not harmless but do we actually know the truth of the alleged incident? If not, perhaps we should shut up until we do.

soontobe Thu 12-Mar-15 14:28:27

Agreed gillybob.

gillybob Thu 12-Mar-15 14:25:59

I think perhaps soontobe was making the point that many people think they can get away with rude/awful comments and remarks by saying they were only joking (after getting caught out of course).
