Just saw an advert relating to the migrants drowning in the Med. and a picture of someone carrying a baby - all you could see were two little feet in a pink baby grow and the rest of the baby was covered in a blanket she was obviously drowned. I cried.

Was the fact that Cameron decided we should stop helping the Italians who take most of the problems in this situation not political, Ana?

durhamjen Wed 22-Apr-15 21:51:51

Nigel Farage is likely to get 15% of the vote in two weeks time. That means
15% of those who vote think like him. It makes me feel ashamed. Because of saying things like this, and it being pointed out, hopefully some people might think again.

Hopefully the terrible dangers involved in this sea crossing will do a lot to put others off the journey in future. As Mishap says in her post, it's not the very poorest quite often that are attempting this journey ( it costs a lot, even with overcrowding on the boats) and with this latest tragedy, they murdered fellow passengers by throwing them overboard, based on their religion. As always, it's the innocent children who suffer.I don't know what the answer is,
But their own countries have to do more to stop them going to sea.

I hardly think posting links to something Nigel Farage has said is helpful, absent. He's not likely to be part of the 'solution'.

absent Wed 22-Apr-15 21:10:37

Ana Surely any solution to this awful situation, which will clearly repeat itself over and over again, will be political – and that is what many of the posters here have been discussing.

Ana Wed 22-Apr-15 20:55:54

Why?

Isn't the present situation sad enough without stirring politics into the mix, as you seem determined to do on the slightest pretext?

durhamjen Wed 22-Apr-15 20:32:15

Perhaps you should have been!

Ana Wed 22-Apr-15 20:29:08

So it was actually you who introduced the topic, durhamjen!

No one else was remotely interested in what NF had or had not said until you posted that link.

durhamjen Wed 22-Apr-15 20:26:08

The reason Christianity was brought into it is because Farage said this morning that we should only take Christians. He's the abomination, as usual.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 22-Apr-15 19:33:12

Sorry! That was flippant on a very sad thread.

But honestly......! hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 22-Apr-15 19:32:19

Quoting soon re Christians. "I sometimes think that they should be at the back of the queue,as we believe we are going to heaven".

Bugger that! shock

To see us discussing religious division as an issue in this humanitarian problem saddens me. These are people in need, whatever their beliefs.

Soutra Wed 22-Apr-15 19:02:18

Oh let's not bring religion into it or confuse "Christian" charity with simple humanity. Organisations such as Medecins sans Frontieres, Red Cross /Red Crescent, SCF, Christian Aid etc do not take religion into account when delivering aid, food, medical treatment or rescuing boat people, so why cloud the issue, magpie123?

soontobe Wed 22-Apr-15 18:54:20

I dont know exactly what muslims believe Ana. It is up to them what they choose to do.

Mishap Wed 22-Apr-15 18:47:06

I cannot help wondering how much publicity there is in the countries from which people are fleeing about the dangers of the trip. An aunt of a lad who died has just described how her nephew, whom she described as an economic migrant, was seduced by photos and reports of the riches in the west - he was relatively comfortably off in his own country.

I know that there are some who are so desperate because of persecution and physical danger and they will risk anything to get away.

Ana Wed 22-Apr-15 18:46:36

Shouldn't that apply to other religions too? Don't Muslims for example believe that they are going to paradise when they die?

soontobe Wed 22-Apr-15 18:39:58

But yes, if you are an adult who thinks you are going to heaven, then you may consider that others' lives are more important.
I dont suppose that this scenario happens very often.

soontobe Wed 22-Apr-15 18:35:19

I wasnt counting children.
I meant adults who have made the decision for themselves.

Ana Wed 22-Apr-15 18:28:16

According to soontobe, the ones who are christened should go to the back of the queue! hmm

whitewave Wed 22-Apr-15 18:23:46

So how do you choose - for example 6 toddlers, half christened and the other half not - you say no to the ones not christened? Blimey what a way to carry on as my Mother would say!!!

soontobe Wed 22-Apr-15 18:19:28

I dont think that christians should have preferential treatment[I say that as a christian]
I sometimes think that they should be at the back of the queue,as we believe we are going to heaven. Others need to have their earthly lives saved before us in my opinion.
<I realise that this may be contoversial, but thought I should say it>
Different I suppose if we were the only ones being persecuted.

magpie123 Wed 22-Apr-15 18:10:33

I agree with Nigel Farage we should only take the Christians, they are being persecuted.

Rome (CNN)Muslims who were among migrants trying to get from Libya to Italy in a boat this week threw 12 fellow passengers overboard -- killing them -- because the 12 were Christians, Italian police said Thursday.

Italian authorities have arrested 15 people on suspicion of murdering the Christians at sea, police in Palermo, Sicily, said.

ISIS are killing people because they are Christians.

soontobe Wed 22-Apr-15 18:09:53

I always wonder whether the republic of Ireland can take some refugees.
Not sure about jobs though.

durhamjen Wed 22-Apr-15 18:02:11

This is what happens when immigrants are demonised.

Farage today.

It will be interesting to see him justify this to Evan Davies tonight.
