Election result

A terrible result for the poorest in society. Just read in WW1 - the people who suffered most in times of austerity were the elderly, disabled and minority groups. It's the I'm alright Jack Society!

I think its time to have well thought out Proportional Representation. It would be far more representative of the actual votes. I believe in coalition government but I would expect parties to retain their principles. Perhaps it would lead to a more equal society that in the end would be good for the vast majority of the population.

"spoke very well" ? soontobe have you read some of her comments?shock
She apparently made them when she was a teenager last year then so that makes it okay. Or does it?

POGS Fri 08-May-15 10:16:30

Asking the same question as on the other thread.

If Miliband stands down is Harriet Harperson the leader of the party until a new one is elected?

soontobe Fri 08-May-15 10:20:48

I have only seen the 20 year old when she spoke last night after she won her seat.
Off to google.

POGS Fri 08-May-15 10:24:55

Answered by Damien McBride.

Harperson will be caretaker for a few months. Better Miliband stayed on.

Ana Fri 08-May-15 10:35:57

Not a bad result for Nige, but didn't manage to take the seat.
Wonder what he'll do now?

POGS Fri 08-May-15 10:36:32

Well.

Clegg, Miliband and now Forage all resigning probably.

Who da thunk it.

granjura Fri 08-May-15 10:37:25

Sout Thanet - Nigel Farage has lost! Best news so far today.

But what a farce, 10 candidates- and all those votes wasted. But I am so glad, just this time- that a Tory won - phew.

tiggypiro Fri 08-May-15 10:51:39

Perhaps Ed Balls will now take some time to learn his tables. Will Ed Milliband be ''clear about this'' now and what on earth is he going to do with his promises in stone ?
I am with the minority of people on here and pleased that Ed and Ed are not going to be in charge.

mollie65 Fri 08-May-15 11:05:26

well said greyduster in the face of an overwhelming pro labour thread.
I do not agree with all the Conservatives have done/will do but the reaction of Labour supporters openly blaming, deriding anyone who did not vote in a similar way to themselves is very unedifying. This is democracy and the election is a democratic process - we should be glad we live in such a society. hmm

Charleygirl Fri 08-May-15 11:11:55

Well said Greyduster and mollie65

Bogoff Fri 08-May-15 11:12:49

Mollie/Greyduster/jane10, well said all of you.

grumppa Fri 08-May-15 11:20:05

Labour supporters may wish to reflect that Ed Milliband was forced on to the PLP by the union vote; perhaps the Labour MPs were right to favour David.

AshTree Fri 08-May-15 11:20:26

Well said jane10 Bogoff? I can't see anything she's said here - are you getting your threads in a tangle? grin

Bogoff Fri 08-May-15 11:21:46

Yes it was on a similar thread.

NotTooOld Fri 08-May-15 11:21:57

granjura - UKIP did, in fact, get 12% of the vote, so does it seem fair that they have only one MP? How representative is that?

POGS Fri 08-May-15 11:24:13

Forage RESIGNED .

Tegan Fri 08-May-15 11:26:41

Speech from jim Murphy is the first truly emotional/eloquent speech I've heard from a politician in years.

Ana Fri 08-May-15 11:31:27

grumppa you're right. If Dave had won the leadership I think it would have been a different story today.

kittylester Fri 08-May-15 11:34:22

Agree Tegan but David Arronovich (sp?) said it was so well crafted that it sounded like he wrote it a week ago as he saw the writing on the wall. sad

POGS Fri 08-May-15 11:34:56

Might David Miliband be tainted when Chilcot Inquiry comes out?

Clegg RESIGNED.

Going down like skittles.

rosesarered Fri 08-May-15 11:43:01

We have two threads now about the election!I believe it's an excellent outcome, and if the country does well, there will be more money to support those who need it, those who vote Lib Dem and Conservative care just as much about poor people and those with disabilities as those who vote Labour, and it seems to be a lazy assumption on here that they do not.
Nick Clegg just gave a very good speech, he has resigned now, and it was probably needed for the party to go ahead with a new leader.Conservatives only need one more vote now for a majority!

soontobe Fri 08-May-15 11:47:13

I find it weird that a conservative majority of 1 is seen as workable. When in elections in the past, it was thought that to have a working majority to sustain a parliament, was seen as about 8 at least.

Ana Fri 08-May-15 11:48:12

Well said, roses. TBH I'm glad Vince Cable and Simon Hughes have gone, they didn't do the Lib Dems' image any good. I wonder who the new leader will be?

soontobe Fri 08-May-15 11:49:43

I just also want to say that politics is brutal.
Someone said that just a few hours ago, Ed Balls may have thought that he stood a reasonable chance of being Chancellor of the Exchequer, and now he has his P45.

I also think that some people, both politicains and otherwise, are going to feel hurt and bewildered and frightened by the result, while others are jubilant.
An emotional time for many.

TerriBull Fri 08-May-15 11:54:20

mollie65 well said, I don't like this supposition by some of the left wing on GN who deem anyone who voted Tory to be selfish people only interested in propping up big business and have a cavalier "I'm all right Jack" attitude. I certainly didn't support everything the Tories have done but I regard them as the lessor of two evils. I'm trying to think of a left wing government anywhere that hasn't been ruinous for their people Venezuela for example and it's always the poor that suffer the most. Looking across the channel I think France's economy has dived under Hollande and social mobility actually went backwards during the period of the last Labour government.

I don't regard Labour voters as a homogenised mass hell bent on state control and interference over every aspect of our lives, I'm sure like the the Conservatives they comprise of a wide spectrum of views, some of the remarks aimed at Tory voters on GN come across as quite vitriolic.

Personally, the one comment that I got sick of hearing over the course of the run up, was Nicola Sturgeon's assertion that she wanted to lock the Tories out of Westminster. Possibly it was with those words in mind that some voters at a late stage were given the impetus to vote Tory. A fear of not wanting the tail wagging the dog.

We lost Vince Cable as our MP where I live and I think one of the reasons for that he ran quite a complacent campaign, taking his constituents for granted, just mailshots telling us all what a great job he'd done and advising not to vote in an unknown quantity. Our new MP Tania Mathias turned over his substantial majority of 12,000ish, she was a very visible presence on the doorstep.
