I am interested in someone who likes him, answering merlotgran's question.

Pompa, you like Priti Patel, so of course you like Tony Blair and his Tory-light persona.

This is the man who said, "We went to war in 1939 to save the Jews". Is someone with such a lack of historical knowledge the right person for this job?

merlotgran Thu 04-Jun-15 20:15:21

Were there any notable achievements during his time as Middle East Peace Envoy?

Jomarie Thu 04-Jun-15 20:12:53

I don't have strong views about the man one way or another - after all, as the song goes "he's just a man" - I don't agree with what he did (Iraq) but I don't think he is intrinsically a "bad guy". Too many people are on his case now for him to actually cause any problems for whatever group he is currently championing, IMO.

Teetime, a brave post indeed. I wonder how history will judge TB, I seem to remember him saying that's how he expects to be judged.

The invasion of Iraq was an unmitigated disaster and it seems TB overstated the 'evidence', to put the kindest spin on his weapons of mass destruction speech. I'd been a TB supporter but like thousands of others took to the streets to march with the slogan 'not in my name'. I like the idea of anybody fighting anti Semitism because it is on the rise, again. I'm not sure TB is the right person to take this job, because of the wide spread suspicion and dislike of him, demonstrated in this thread and elsewhere.

pompa Thu 04-Jun-15 20:00:32

You are not alone Teetime, I have always liked him.

Teetime Thu 04-Jun-15 18:59:26

At the risk of being ostracised - I LIKE TONY BLAIR and I like the idea of him fighting anti-Semitism but then I would wouldn't I?

Tried to highlight Nelliemoser's last sentence but can't. There is no way TB can be useful. He is despicable.

Nelliemoser Thu 04-Jun-15 17:59:14

The issues about anti semitism are not much different from other issues of racism or sectarianism or any much other "ism". Although people do seem to have been having a go at Jews for longer than many others.
(Tom Lehrer had one of his satirical songs with the line "and everybody hates the Jews.)

The only differences seems to be about which group of people those who indulged in such behaviour choose to hate.
If they "Got rid of the Jews" they would be likely to have to find some other identifiable group to pick on and discriminate hate.

If TB really wants to be useful he should go all out against all versions of racial, religious, ethnic and sectarian discrimination. Not just single out a particular group. That could just stir up further divisions.

Have just read this from the National Secular Society. They have valid concerns about TB's new job.

He disappoints me, because I think he got a lot of it right, up until he got on his Iraq War hobbyhorse. He could see how to make Labour electable in a way that Brown and Milliband can't.

thatbags Thu 04-Jun-15 16:14:14

Who has given him this job? Perhaps save one's ire for them instead.

Anti-semitism is on the increase in Europe though. Wanting to defuse it is not a bad idea.

So in principle I wish him luck even though the man himself gives me the creeps. He didn't (give me the creeps) in 1997.

loopylou Thu 04-Jun-15 15:38:56

Shudder....
I can't stand the self-aggrandising hypocrite

I presume he'll be paid obscene amounts of money to swan around grinning inanely at every camera he can spy.

Suspecti'mheadingfordeletion!

A lot of high profile people do charity work that we don't hear about it; am wondering if he does [although I very much doubt it angry]?

Liz46 Thu 04-Jun-15 14:24:09

I started to post and then decided he may sue me!

Tony Blair appointed as head of European body fighting antisemitism.

Cant he see what damage he has already created in the Middle East, and of course at home sending our troops to war unprepared.

He is such a hypocrite.
