Terror attacks in France and Tunisia/now

What a scary time we live in.

One man beheaded this morning in France, now at least 19 people killed in attacks on 'possibly' 2 hotels in Sousse, Tunisia. That is what is being reported at the moment, they are believed to be tourists.

It must be terrifying for those on holiday being told to barricade themselves in their rooms.

Just awful.

It's tedious when interesting discussion with differing points of view being well expressed explodes or deteriorates into nasty snipes between individuals. "light hearted banter" is a phrase often used to defend indefensible rudeness. It's the kind of nonsense sprouted by people like Jeremy C who says he calls a spade a spade, thereby giving himself the right to be obnoxious.

Anya It was not a little light hearted banter "between yourselves". It was on a public forum FGS. "Ganging up against" and Spiteful comes to mind.

I'm with you eloethan.
As the level of intelligent argument drops, the level of caustic nastiness rises.
Nothing wrong with a good-going argument when posters feel strongly about a difficult subject, but it becomes pointless when a thread degenerates into vitriol and the focus of the debate is lost in bitchiness.
Now I wonder if my comment will be branded patronising, bullying, offensive or sarcastic.

Nelliemoser Wed 01-Jul-15 07:25:11

Eloethan has a good point.
It sounds to me very snide for two posters to to have such a "conversation" between them about a third party.
That is a classic a playground bullying tactic.

Anya Wed 01-Jul-15 06:45:59

Eloethan you are quite capable of dishing out patronising and rude comments yourself, as seen in your post above! Are you referring to a little light-hearted banter between Ana and myself or to AB calling Jingl an insulting smart arse or something else entirely?

We are all quite capable of defending ourselves from such mild abuse I assure you.

We all know that Sharia law is not part of the British legal system, which is why some of us are dismayed to see aspects of it being applied in this country. We are also aware of the position of women within this and other religions which have yet to fully come of age.

Eloethan Tue 30-Jun-15 23:51:56

Some of these sarcastic and, frankly, quite rude exchanges are very reminiscent of the sort of bullying behaviour that many of us will no doubt have observed at school.

If you have to resort to insulting those with whom you disagree then it seems to me you don't have much confidence in your ability to present a coherent and sensible argument.

Sharia plays no part in the British legal process, any more than Beth Din does. However, both carry a great deal of legitimacy in their respective religious communities and they are similar in that they are male dominated and operate in a way that disadvantages women.

And I was only asking not policing the board as accused this week, what you do for amusement is your choice

durhamjen Tue 30-Jun-15 23:18:57

Has anybody read about the march or have you been too busy mocking people?

Anniebach Tue 30-Jun-15 23:17:42

Unkind comments are becoming more frequent but if there is a need to be unkind why not directly to the person ? Why mock anyone because they can't agree with you ?

Anniebach Tue 30-Jun-15 23:13:51

No Saint, just asking why two intelligent women choose to mock a fellow poster , why not speak directly to a poster not be bitchy, one asked why a poster said publicly they wished to send a PM , does it not apply to mocking, if there is a need to do it why publicly . I am surprised how bitchy some can be and so ask why

Ana Tue 30-Jun-15 23:10:44

grin

Unkind? durhamjen is not averse to dishing out unkind comments herself.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 30-Jun-15 23:06:03

....and Saint Anniebach pops up again! grin

Anniebach Tue 30-Jun-15 23:04:11

Why so unkind ?

Ana Tue 30-Jun-15 23:01:10

I'm sure it was for the best...

Anya Tue 30-Jun-15 22:59:52

You're a hard woman!

Ana Tue 30-Jun-15 22:57:13

I thought it better to nip it in the bud, Anya...wink

Anya Tue 30-Jun-15 22:54:39

That's a bit harsh Ana! You've probably cut DJ to the quick by telling her that she's not the centre of your universe sad

Ana Tue 30-Jun-15 22:30:27

Quite.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 30-Jun-15 22:28:18

I think it's odd when people say on a thread that they are going to PM another poster. Sounds cliquey. Why not just do it? After all, it's going to be a private message. Why bother to broadcast it?

Ana Tue 30-Jun-15 22:22:02

BTW my post of 21.21 was not addressed to you, durhamjen but to soontobe. You are not the centre of my universe, although you seem to think that...hmm

Ana Tue 30-Jun-15 22:19:53

'said or implied'

Ana Tue 30-Jun-15 22:18:57

Have you got something against the Humanist Association and St. John Ambulance, Ana?

What on earth is that supposed to mean? Where have I said I have implied anything of the sort?

durhamjen Tue 30-Jun-15 22:16:02

I agree, Tegan. On the other hand, it's slightly better than destroying everything. Maybe they haven't worked that out yet.

durhamjen Tue 30-Jun-15 22:11:36

Have you got something against the Humanist Association and St. John Ambulance, Ana?

Tegan Tue 30-Jun-15 22:09:38

I need to watch it on catchup as I only caught the end. The fact that IS are selling ancients artefacts to fund their war and destroying others so that the ones they sell are worth more is disgusting [not to mention two faced] sad.
