First of all in my opinion we do not spend too much on welfare. We dont spend enough!
Our State pensions are much lower than European levels, and German Social Security is 3 to 4 times higher than ours, and non means tested.
This is proven by a recent press article stating that English immigrants unemployed in Germany receive three to four times the amount of non- means tested Social Security from the German tax payer, than Eastern European immigrants unemployed here in Britain receive from the British tax payer in means tested benefits.
Welfare spending on State pensioners here in Britain represents 46 per cent of the budget, the highest proportion, with the Winter Fuel payment representing just 2 per cent, and Pensions Credit is just 5 per cent..
Income Support represents 5 per cent of the budget, and Employment Support Allowance is just 2 per cent, with Job Seekers Allowance at just 3 per cent. Disability Living Allowance is just 8 per cent. And Housing Benefit is just 14 per cent, other benefits are even less by percentage, but we are being lead to believe we have a bludgeoning State, we dont!
TV programmes like Benefits Street, have truly cornered the market in cheap, sensationalist, so-called entertainment, and people watch, then judge, then make it the whole.
And in my view, this is part parcel of how and why David Cameron made it back into number 10. 36.7 per cent of the electorate, under 25 per cent of the population, assisted in securing David Cameron another 5 years in Government. 75 per cent of the country didn’t want Cameron back in number 10. This is a true vote of no confidence in the Government and in our totally undemocratic “first past the post” voting system, FPTP, is simply not fit for purpose.
In my 99.9 per cent of the public dont realise that this right wing Tory Government are using the deficit as a cover to shrink the State for ideological reasons, Austerity is just a media tag, and further more this all began in the 1980’s when Margaret Thatcher began rolling back the State for the same ideological purposes.
When the 2010 coalition was formed David Cameron and George Osborne continued where Margaret Thatcher left off, and now since May 7th, 37 per cent of the English electorate put David Cameron and George Osborne back into 10 Downing Street, effectively giving them permission to carry through Margaret Thatcher’s original 1980 objective to shrink the State further, and this is exactly what they are doing. They are driven by their right wing ideology, nothing will derail them from their target.
Britain is an exceedingly rich country, no child need live in poverty, , nobody should need to rely on food banks, but they do.
According to The Trussell Trust, over 1 million people now use food banks, and The Trussell Trust say this figure doesn’t include food banks run by other charities, and churches.
But this right wing Tory Government are not reducing the State due to costs, David Cameron and George Osborne are reducing the State because they are ideologically opposed to the State and everything attached to it. They do not believe in the concept of the NHS, and they have an inherent loathing of the Welfare State.
We are allowing ourselves to be conned into believing that Tory Austerity is good for us, good for the country, good for the tax paper. Why else would 37 per cent of the English electorate, from a 66 per cent turn-out, vote for more of the same ?. It’s because we English are largely not political animals, unlike the German’s, French, and Greeks.
I have always known that Britain’s welfare State is based on charity, paid out on a means tested bases, to those most in need, targeted, with a costly and expensive bureaucratic system behind it.
Where European Welfare Systems are based on solidarity, non means tested, EU workers pay more income tax and other contributions to pay for generous payments compared to ours.....
And this is because the European State plays a vital role in investment and subsidy, where the UK’s State has been rolled back and stigmatized since the 1980’s and the Thatcher years.
I just cannot believe those who voted Tory on May 7th, truly want the kind of society David Cameron and George Osborne are creating ?
