When David Cameron used the word 'swarm' in relation the the migrants in Calais.
The media are doing their best to make me think that I should be. I keep thinking about it, and I'm not.

Yes, it is a generalisation but by various measures (and data; see Max Roser's stuff) it is true.

Things are improving world-wide, even in the poorest countries.

thatbags I can't help feeling that this comment is a wee bit Pollyanna. Some things are improving in some of the poorest countries, but everything is actually getting worse in some others. Sudan springs to mind, for example.

The "warm and fuzzy" bit.

<tries, unsuccessfully, to stop grinning>

lily grin

He/she has posted on at least one other thread over the weekend.

Lilygran Mon 03-Aug-15 20:28:50

I haven't seen any other posts from SineDie. I hope the straight-for-the-jugular responses from the warm and fuzzy regulars haven't driven her (or him) away!

rosequartz Mon 03-Aug-15 20:06:22

but what a lack of "cleverness" you showed in not being born into one of the richest families in that countries.

But we don't know that she/he wasn't!

Gracesgran Mon 03-Aug-15 20:03:05

Just seen that you may have been being sarcastic. I would apologise - well I do if you were - but people have said such things in all seriousness and I am not sure how we are supposed to tell.

thatbags Mon 03-Aug-15 20:01:33

They won't all leave. Some will sweat it out and in most cases things will improve slowly but surely. Things are improving world-wide, even in the poorest countries.

Gracesgran Mon 03-Aug-15 20:01:16

There problem is that they weren't lucky enough SineDie. "Clever" would make you believe that you had some influence over it. You are lucky indeed to have been born in a rich country but what a lack of "cleverness" you showed in not being born into one of the richest families in that countries.

Really some people do talk nonsense although perhaps I should remember that we are equally lucky or unlucky to be able to talk good sense and not blame those who do come out with claptrap.

rosequartz Mon 03-Aug-15 20:00:03

Do you not see the illogicality, at the very least, of lumping all residents of one country together as if they all share the same view?

Precisely my point, FarNorth!

rosequartz Mon 03-Aug-15 19:58:54

I assumed SineDie was being facetious.

The sad thing is that these are young, energetic, enterprising people who would be an asset to the countries they are escaping from, if only the conditions were better there.
Who will change things for the better when they have all left?

FarNorth Mon 03-Aug-15 19:58:27

rosesarered Mon 03-Aug-15 19:58:14

I think Sine Die was using sarcasm Nigglynellie.

Gracesgran Mon 03-Aug-15 19:51:58

Your view of hypocrisy seems to vary from mine too ....

I'm fascinated POGS. How do you see hypocrisy?

nigglynellie Mon 03-Aug-15 19:51:46

Heavens SineDie, You'll get crucified for saying that!!

SineDie Mon 03-Aug-15 19:33:34

Their problem is that they weren't clever enough to be born in a rich country.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 03-Aug-15 18:57:39

We have to budge up and take them. It will be fine. They could be our saving grace. They are young.

thatbags Mon 03-Aug-15 18:49:24

Yes, of course we care. But the problem seems insurmountable.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 03-Aug-15 18:45:35

Anyone with a son of that age cares. sad

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 03-Aug-15 18:44:40

Of course we care! (About the welfare of the migrants. Not about DC's use of words)

durhamjen Mon 03-Aug-15 18:42:11

Or caring, bags?

thatbags Mon 03-Aug-15 18:32:23

Oh, I see that one died as a result of getting crushed when trying to get onto a lorry. Yes, desperate. Or foolhardy. Possibly both. No way of knowing really.

Eloethan Mon 03-Aug-15 18:31:49

thatbags This is what a Guardian report said in July, following a recent death:

"A total of nine migrants have died near the Channel tunnel terminal since June. Two other Sudanese migrants, both in their 30s, were recovering in hospital after being struck by high-speed trains on Monday."

thatbags Mon 03-Aug-15 18:25:41

Were the nine migrants who have died since June residents of the camp they call The Jungle?
