Are you saying, Questiontime, that anyone who voted for New Labour was voting for fascism? Nazi boots on the ground and all that, people sent to concentration camps?

It was probably one of those pea jackets that are, in fact quite posh albeit donkey jacket looking. Gosh I've just remembered that I have a letter signed by him when I wrote about a rally in Hyde Park [must dig it out]. He was such a 'decent' man, at a time when a lot of politicians were decent; Phillip Whitehead being another example [he used to call himself my agony aunt because I always used to write to him when I was worried about something; not wanting to write to my own MP who was Edwina Currie .

I don't think Cameron is anything like that Thatcher woman.

The only thing they have in common is trying to put the country back on a sound economic footing after recessions, the first during the Callaghan years and the second following Brown's reign.

For all those on this thread that don't 'get' the coat joke......well, you either have a good, surreal sense of humour or you don't. Simples.
Michael Foot favoured the duffel coat around that time, but a posh version of the donkey jacket sometimes, as Tegan says.perhaps he thought it put him in touch with the working man, or maybe he just found them cosy, but either way, although he seemed a nice person, he did look scruffy for an MP, particularly back then.
What do you get if you cross a pea jacket,with a donkey jacket ( and an amorous duffel coat gets in on the act)? A peaduffledon of course!

OK let's look at recessions since Callaghan
Mid 70's recession caused primarily by the oil crises, poor British productivity and high wagw demand because of inflationary pressure due to the oil crises. Heath and Callaghan involved.
Recession in mid 80 s
Who was the PM oh let me see - blimey it was Thatcher -
Caused by her pursuit of monetarism, which she eventually dropped, but not before she has caused countless businesses go bust and unemp!oyment rise to 11.9%.
Recession in mid 90 s caused by the Lawson boom and the ERM debacle - reme!ber black Wednesday

I can see a pattern emerging here
Recession in 2008 caused by sub prime mortgage debacle, crises in UK banks and credit crunch.
2010 plans put in place by the Labour government began to see growth in the economy only to be utterly squashed by the Tory government. This is still very fragilea full 6 years after they took office.

Of course, we all think Labour did wonderfully well, which is why as a country we didn't trust them with the economy at the last two general elections!

Gordon Brown was a hopeless PM.

So was James Callaghan, which was why Labour was almost unelectable for 18+ years after his term in office. Although, to be fair, I think the Trades Unions didn't do him any favours.

If you consider all the recessions since the 70 s the only ones caused by internal factors were those when the Tories were in office. Including the most recent.
You would be hard pushed to blame the Labour Government for the sub prime debacle

What I can't understand is why, all things considered, I've faithfully voted Labour all these years

How can you when faced with these facts simply ignore the Tory implication in every one since the 70 s?
