I felt sorry at the time that so many were losing their livliehoods, in some areas there wasn't much other work. However, we are where we are and cannot continually live in the past.I am glad that nobody has to go down the mines thses days.

rosesarered, you may be glad men no longer have to go down the mines, it doesn't follow that the many unemployed men in South Wales would rather be without work than go doen the mine does it ? We don't know because they don't have a choice between benefits and a mine

I live in the Durham coalfields. UK Coal, a private coalmining company, has just been given permission to open a mine about two miles away from where I live. It's given all sorts of promises about jobs and reinstating the land in a few years time when it has finished opencasting.
Not one local job for ex-miners, but a handful of jobs for lorry drivers.
UK Coal has gone bust and is now subsidised by tax payers so it will not be in a position to reinstate the land. Again it will be taxpayers who will foot the bill, but I bet the shareholders make money out of it.

You may be glad British men are no longer going down the mines rosesarered (although I agree with Anniebach that they may wish they still had the option), but that's not because the UK no longer needs the coal. Plenty of men in other countries still go down mines to produce our coal and perhaps face greater danger in countries where safety standards are poor. The UK's reliance on coal is the same now as 20 years ago. Remind me again why productive mines were closed by Thatcher.

Boris Johnson is an immigrant. He was born in the US and lived there for five years, and has said he could actually be PM in this country and then President of the US.

Last year he said he was not going to give up his US citizenship. Then he sold a mansion in this country, and was sent a big tax bill from the US. He refused to pay it, saying it wasn't fair, but he still wanted to keep his US citizenship.
This year he quietly paid the bill, and then said he would relinquish his US citizenship. That was when he was thinking of taking over from Cameron when the Tories were supposed to lose the election. He is saying it's rather difficult to give up US citizenship, they put lots of obstacles in your way.
The reason he paid the tax bill was because he wanted to go to the US to plug his book about Churchill.

That's why I said that immigrant. I do not know what all the fuss is about.
