Good points, POGS.
JC apparently said we should "celebrate" the record net-migration figures, but there doesn't seem to be much celebration on this thread, just the usual criticism of the government for not having achieved the impossible in 100 days...

Cameron fails on immigration
(98 Posts)So DC has failed to reach his target for immigration. If the government was a school it would probably be in special measures as failing. What should we do with this failing government?
Not if you only set the target three months ago, trisher, and there are still four and three-quarter years to go of the period set aside for reaching the target.
Maybe David Cameron simply 'is no different to anyone else'
The Tories 'have failed' on immigration but what I am finding very hard to do is understand the flow of yet another thread.
Is the OP a question or a statement?
If it is a question are you asking because you have concerns we have too many immigrants?
I am struggling with those who are attacking the government for not fulfilling it's commitment to cut immigration yet on other threads they are virtually saying the government are bastards over their immigration policy. Can't have your cake and eat it without being accused of hypocrisy if that is you.
If it is a statement then yes you are correct the government is like all others who have preceded this one failed on immigration.
I am struggling there for to understand if the thread is just an attack on the government and bugger all to do with immigration. Or is it a thread discussing immigration numbers.
If you set a target for anything and don't reach it you have, by common agreement about language, failed. Schools are set targets all the time and schools which don't meet their targets are described as failing. The reasons for that failure can be very diverse but do not excuse it. Why is DC different to everyone and everything else? Failing schools have a number of measures put in place to improve their performance, someone should do the same for this government.
A bit of a back handed compliment,
trisher, David Cameron hasnt failed at anything. David Cameron is a very competent right wing Tory leader and Prime Minister of this country, who with the help of the right wing press and right wing biased BBC, managed to fool 37 per cent of a 66 per cent turn out of the electorate in May this year to vote for him.
We all know thatQT .Teaching granny to suck eggs springs to mind.
When will people realise that the Anglo/Saxon-EU Agreement "Freedom of movement in employment" means that Cameron cant do a damn thing about controlling Eastern European immigrants coming to this country. This speculation is media fodder for the lemmings out there who dont take an interest in politics.
There are over 3 million English "immigrants" living, working, and retired in other EU country's because of this "Agreement".
Oh we realise rose but so easy to snipe at Tories (note the spelling) they are making such a dogs dinner of everything.
When will people realise this is a huge problem for ALL governments, it may be fun having a snipe at the Conservatives for some, but Labour last time round had a problem with it too.there are no easy answers.
Duh. Just understood "net migration" properly!
I presume the Conservative Party Manifesto 2015, which I've just looked up, was published before the General Election in May. On page 31 it says this:
"We will keep our ambition of delivering annual net migration in the tens of thousands, not the hundreds of thousands".
The precise meaning of that is exactly what it says, that the Party will keep its ambition to get net immigration (I notice it actually says migration which, strictly speaking, includes migration out of Britain and well as into I would have thought). An ambition is not a promise to do a particular thing but an intention to attempt to achieve something. Not achieving said thing is not a failure not only because it could not be achieved in three months anyway (since the GE Manifesto was published) but also, as anya says, an unforeseen migrant and refugee problem has occurred since the manifesto was written.

Well I guess one mans meat is another mans poison.
You could say one man thinks those who don't agree with them are idiots the other man thinks they are narcasistic.
One man says he has a knowledge superior to another man, the other man thinks he is a big headed t--t.
Now which man you believe yourself to be is the question but to the other man you are one of them.
In fact, thinking on, it is only the recent reporting of the plight of refugees by the major channels, which has brought this terrible state of affairs to the public's notice.
Do you really believe the BBC is under the control of the government Tricia?
If so I'm wondering why this particular government is trying so hard to limit the BBC. They are planting the idea, drip feeding it, in the public's mind, that it is not worth the licence fee. There was a thread on here recently which showed that for some this message seemed to have been accepted as true. Very clever to put a monetary slant on it for those who object to paying out.
It's not a case of 'not worth the fee' there is a far more important issue here at stake, and the BBC as one of the largest of its kind in the world, does pose a threat to any attempts by any government to slip changes past the populace.
Indeed watching the ITV 10 o'clock news last night I was impressed by the obvious suppressed anger of the newsreader at the recent deaths in Austira and the Mediterranean, so not just the BBC.
That's why a Canadian woman was sent back to Canada when her husband was waiting for an operation for cancer, Mary. Sick, isn't it?
There is already a plan to expel all immigrants who aren't earning "enough". Like nearly all the nurses in the NHS for example. That kills two birds with one stone, meets goals for denying people the right to live and work where they choose and forcing the sell-off of the NHS to his buddies.
Would it be possible for some people here on this island next to Europe to consider what kind of world we are living in today. There can be no restriction of immigration at the moment with thousands - tens, hundreds of thousands coming to Europe. No politician knows what to do. They have had no experience, no practice at it. It is a completely new situation which needs new ideas and a some generosity of spirit to find a solution.
At least it would be something to be proud of if the Uk were at the fore front helping the much poorer nations cope with impossible situations - and taking a few thousands in themselves.
I doubt if any governent has kept to its target of immigration.
I don't know JC's views on the subject but I trust he will not be small minded about it.
I think one of the reasons Jeremy Corbyn is doing so well is that he is seen as basically truthful, honest and reliable.
It depends whose truth you want to believe, TriciaF.
The trouble is, it seems that most people get their info, and believe it, from the TV or from one of the popular daily newspapers, which are mostly under the control of the present govt. (via Murdoch.) So we're fed the stories that those in power want us to believe.
Even the radio, which we listen to more, is biased.
So where do we get the truth from?
I think only idiots actually believe politicians promises in the first place. Maybe I'm just cynical after seeing the government baton passed from party to party over the years. None of them ever fixes everything to the satisfaction of everybody.
That's why I didn't say, Trisher. I'd be thrown off Gransnet.
Gullible?
"Only an idiot"-it's David Cameron dj that explains everything! So what can you call the people who believed him? (Only repeatable answers please)
Only an idiot would have promised to get immigration figures down to tens of thousands, in my opinion.
Unfortunately there were a lot who believed him.
I know he wouldn't use the word refugees because he doesn't like them either. However, it's refugees who are the problem, not immigrants as such.
