As jinglbellsfrocks had the last word in the last thread about Jermy Corbyn, I am starting a new one.

Do you think that the election of Jeremy Corbyn has scuppered Labour's chances of winning the next election or has it revitalised the party?

I do hope that people everywhere with a leftist 'bent' won't get too comfortable and excited by all the socialist hot air and promises, because it won't ever happen. The best they can expect is that a future Labour Leader
Which won't be Corbyn, as he will never make PM, will take them in a slightly more left leaning direction.Only slightly, mind, or they will never get back into power. So, it doesn't really matter what is promised, debated, etc in Conference or the next few years, beacause they are not likely to win a GE if things carry on as they are now.I think, from reading a lot of threads on here, that all but a very few Gnetters, already know this in their hearts.

Yes it was a good speech wasn't it pogs?, and as you rightly said and probably recognised policy will be formulated in the future months as consultation and debate with the Labour Party.
Q E? This is used as a tool of government in time of recession. I posted this explanation a couple of weeks or so ago. Governments have other tools they can turn to prior to that like government bonds etc. All governments have used qe the last recession. QE will not take priority unless another recession hits us, something of a danger given China's woes and our unstable growth based once again on property price rise and consumer debt. Next time though the "printed" money will not be given to disappear into the bankers coffers which was a somewhat sterile operation, but instead be used to invest in new infrastructure, like new hospitals, new bridges, roads etc. The result of this will be to provide construction companies, architects, etc with business, the knock on effect will be money into the economy, greater employment etc. The debt which will be incurred by the government, will gradually be paid down, as the tax receipt from the extra economic activity increase.

Robin Hood tax? Well that well known extreme left wing German Chancellor is a strong exponent. This is generally a tax of 1000th of each transaction, and it is calculated to raise 30bn pa. A useful amount to help with our debt.
This will be consulted on and formulated, in conjunction with people like Merkel, and yess, if it is accepted then it will form part of Labour Policy.

Consultation with the likes of the French Academic, a Bank of England consultant etc, happens with all governments. You surely don't imagine that Osborne hasn't done the same!!!! Don't read anything into Murphy not being mentioned, only the new people were brought to our notice.

POGS Tue 29-Sept-15 01:30:59

Well I have just had the opportunity to watch McDonnells speach.

Where was the policy , where was PQE. Will the Robin Hood tax come into force unilaterally?

All I heard was Labour will debate, listen , discuss engage with the likes of Pickerty etc. etc. (no mention of Murphy, anything to read into that). For every 1000 economists McDonnell will find another 1000 who will argue they are wrong.

I didn't get to know how Labour will fund, source their policies but perhaps it is a bit unfair to expect too much detail so early on. I will watch with interest.

Yes I did jen, I think Hardie would have been pleased to see the party he founded returning to socialism

durhamjen Mon 28-Sept-15 23:19:55

Anyone see the man on the news who said that McConnell's speech was the best chancellor's speech he'd heard since 1947?

How to kill the bedroom tax.

durhamjen Mon 28-Sept-15 20:12:22

A hundred years since Keir Hardie died. I wonder what he would have thought.
France will not use the reactors because they are not thought to be safe, but they'll build them here, with the help of the Chinese.
Anyone with EDF want to object? Change your supplier and tell them why.

whitewave Mon 28-Sept-15 18:46:38

200bn to the Chinese it is scandalous. Chinese engineers - what is wrong with our engineers? Owned by the French I can't believe what he is doing. Wrong type of reactor according to Greens, who by the way support nuclear.
How safe will the reactors be?
Thank goodness for some sanity in the form of McDonnell at least we will own are own railway and utilities eventually.

durhamjen Mon 28-Sept-15 18:39:45

Same here. I watched it. Brilliant.
I want to know now what they are going to do about the steel industry on Teesside.
This country is being flooded with cheap imported steel from China, and Osborne is over there begging China to come and make our railways and power stations. How could the government do this?
Rotherham will be next.
Northern powerhouse? What a laugh.

France, Germany and Italy have all taken action to protect their industries.
Why can't we? They are in Europe as well.

whitewave Mon 28-Sept-15 18:29:35

Idiot. Name and shame I say!

Anniebach Mon 28-Sept-15 18:26:47

Not exactly ? not at all, did you hear an interview on the beeb with a spokesman from the CBI ? He thought it wrong to speak of companies who dodge paying tax by name !

whitewave Mon 28-Sept-15 18:23:08

Pleased to hear of some of his advisors like Pickerty - excellent!!

whitewave Mon 28-Sept-15 18:21:36

Not exactly the searing far left out and out communistgrin

Many of his policies are supported by those other well known communists Merkel and Obama so we can be satisfied that his extremism is out of a solid stable.

Anniebach Mon 28-Sept-15 18:07:16

Yes me whitewave, I thought he did really well

whitewave Mon 28-Sept-15 18:04:32

Anyone watch McDonnell's speach?

durhamjen Mon 28-Sept-15 15:08:28

theconversation.com/corbyn-public-ownership-push-reflects-what-is-happening-all-round-the-world-47652

An excellent article about how Corbyn's call for renationalising the privatised public services is bang on trend.

durhamjen Mon 28-Sept-15 14:57:18

Hilary Benn gave a brilliant speech at the conference, didn't he, Gracesgran?

durhamjen Mon 28-Sept-15 14:56:11

www.politics.co.uk/blogs/2015/09/28/corbyn-s-trident-defeat-means-britain-will-break-internation

Like for like Trident replacement breaks the non-proliferation treaty. It means we are worse than Iran.

durhamjen Mon 28-Sept-15 14:51:33

blogs.channel4.com/snowblog/hans-blix-advises-britain-abandon-trident/20426

This is from 2013. The government hasn't taken any notice of Hans Blix.
Perhaps by the time Corbyn is elected as PM he will have persuaded his own party to believe Hans Blix.

Gracesgran Mon 28-Sept-15 12:03:41

I am loving watching Hilary Benn with Andrew Neil. Poor Andrew, how hard it is to be a journalist when people are telling you what they believe and admitting they don't all have exactly the same view, that they can openly discuss this and will support democratic party decisions.

They are trying so hard to see it as divisive but really doing nothing at all to present the different arguments - what are these people called "top" journalists being paid?

Anya Mon 28-Sept-15 11:52:43

wink

Anniebach Mon 28-Sept-15 11:48:16

Rosequartz you said it was worthy of debate so I put forward my reasons for considering these offices of state , which are just tradition, have no place now . If we take the five only then the Tories have one woman , labour none, surely what is important is the best person for the job not the sex of the person

We have some traditions which we want to treasure but there are many we now ignore.

A tradition in the Anglican Church was women covering their heads in church, this just stopped, no questions , no press coverage

Untill quite recently the speaker of the house wore a wig and breeches, Betty Boothroyd chose not to wear a wig, Michael Martin chose not to wear breeches, these decisions didn't cause an uproar.

This press coverage on the five offices of state is just a reason to attack Corbyn, with poverty, cut backs in welfare etc is tradition of more importance ?

If you read my posts properly, I'm not arguing with you, but please carry on!

Anniebach Mon 28-Sept-15 10:37:48

They seem to have been the only offices of state in the 19th century
