As jinglbellsfrocks had the last word in the last thread about Jermy Corbyn, I am starting a new one.

Do you think that the election of Jeremy Corbyn has scuppered Labour's chances of winning the next election or has it revitalised the party?

Just been watching JC on Andrew Marr's programme. I really can't make up my mind about that man. Having lived through and suffered from, a left wing Labour government I really don't want to see another one.

Most of his supporters are young and I understand this. When I was 17 I wore a red enamelled badge on which was a golden hammer and sickle. In those days communism sounded wonderful. Needless to say when I began to discover what it was really like living in the USSR I changed my mind.
What is that saying? 'If you're not a Socialist when young, you're hard in the heart. If you're still a Socialist when adult, you're soft in the head.'
If everyone were a Socialist it would be an ideal world but very few of us are unselfish enough so it doesn't work. However, young people tend to be soft hearted and would be attracted by JC's rhetoric.

Have you noticed though that he isn't quite as adamant as he was about the changes he wants to make? He has in effect a coalition Shadow Cabinet. If he is forced to relinquish some of his extreme plans, will the young forgive him?

Business not important, either, Anniebach.

Anniebach Sun 27-Sept-15 09:44:28

Eloethan, I use to meet Tim West and Prunella Scales there most years , sadly not now. Hope those who are in Brighton will tell us what's really going on, the beeb only speaks of back stabbing and blood flowing

Anniebach Sun 27-Sept-15 09:40:23

All the conferences over the years and I miss this one, couldn't leave my dog. Wish I was there, debates not spin, love it.

Rosequartz, health and education are not of importance ?

Gracesgran Sun 27-Sept-15 09:25:47

How wonderful Eloethan. I do think this is an important bit of history. Looking forward to your "view from the conference*

Eloethan Sat 26-Sept-15 23:49:01

Went to collectour passes for the conference. Saw the actress who plays Izzy in Coronation Street waiting to collect hers. We are going tomorrow.

durhamjen Sat 26-Sept-15 23:32:09

Roseq, how important do you think health and education are?

Yes, Gracesgran, it was interesting to see that those countries which are worst off and have the largest family size are actually given the least. I wonder where Syria are on the list.
That's why I give money to Actionaid, Gracesgran. They look for the smallest ways to help people the most, like ways to bring clean water and power. It's the Schumacher Institute.

Gracesgran Sat 26-Sept-15 23:23:50

Jen I agree with your hope that "all those who think we should not give money to other countries have watched it" although I do think we should really make sure the money is direct where it is needed. What would it have cost to build the small dam that the man needed and help with a basic irrigation system?

I was like you, fascinated by the simplicity of getting people out of absolute poverty but it also seemed that once that is done access to education quickly improves situations even further.

I was way out with the quiz too. smile

rosequartz Sat 26-Sept-15 18:59:50

Has anyone asked him about women in the top Shadow ......
Oh, never mind.

durhamjen Sat 26-Sept-15 17:55:11

Sorry, I do not know. Hope I haven't got your hopes up unnecessarily. I know she wanted to go to the count in London but decided not to.

whitewave Sat 26-Sept-15 17:51:35

Oh is she here? We could have met up!!

durhamjen Sat 26-Sept-15 17:38:50

Lucky you. I wonder if Anniebach is there.

whitewave Sat 26-Sept-15 17:09:59

Just watching JC addressing the women's conference here in Brighton.

soontobe Sat 26-Sept-15 16:29:18

I might watch it at some point.

durhamjen Sat 26-Sept-15 16:24:32

Watch the programme, soon. Gracesgran has given you a link to it.
It tells you all you need to know about poverty, absolute and relative.
Then you can argue about whether the line moves or not.

soontobe Sat 26-Sept-15 16:16:06

I was reading today, I think the Womens Weekly, that whole families and streets in South London used to consider two weeks hop picking in Kent 60 years ago, from 7am to 5pm as their annual and only holiday hmm.

soontobe Sat 26-Sept-15 16:13:50

What is absolute poverty?
Pretty sure the line on that has moved many times.

durhamjen Sat 26-Sept-15 14:43:33

Just watched it today. I recorded it and was going to remove it to free up space to record something else, but have left it on to show my grandson, who often asks about poor people.
It will be interesting to see what he says.
I thought it was a brilliant programme, so easy to tell what the problem is and how it needs to be fixed. Just hoped all those who think we should not give money to other countries have watched it.
I also hope that something comes of it. Who would have thought absolute poverty could be eradicated and population controlled in that short a time.

I was way out with the quiz, I don't know about you, Gracesgran. But the fact that there are as many people living in absolute poverty now as there were in 1800 is quite worrying, too.

Gracesgran Fri 25-Sept-15 23:10:43

I think we have all learned from the GE polls Ana. Also this is a peculiar time to look at polls as other conferences are taking place. He has time I think.

Did you see the Hans Rosling programme Jen? It's here if anyone is interested.

durhamjen Fri 25-Sept-15 20:51:06

Did you?

Ana Fri 25-Sept-15 20:44:08

I seem to recall that you yourself gave them great weight before the leadership election, durhamjen, and indeed before the general election.

durhamjen Fri 25-Sept-15 20:39:45

Do you actually believe polls?

Ana Fri 25-Sept-15 20:31:17

Not doing very well in the polls, is he?

rosequartz Fri 25-Sept-15 20:12:01

Not watched it yet, the RUGBY keeps coming on
Is there a World cup or something ...?

Gracesgran Thu 24-Sept-15 21:08:36

Do let me know what you think Roseq I thought it was amazingly interesting.

I heard on the radio (I can't remember which programme) that people on £30,000 a year - quite a good salary I would say but not exceptional - are in the top 10% of global earnings. All so interesting when you look globally.
