As jinglbellsfrocks had the last word in the last thread about Jermy Corbyn, I am starting a new one.

Do you think that the election of Jeremy Corbyn has scuppered Labour's chances of winning the next election or has it revitalised the party?

So now we have two threads about Trident... A bit excessive.Have already put what I think on the other thread, but will just say that Comrade Corbyn has made the mistake of his political career by saying he would never under any circumstances push the button. He's finished now and will never become Prime Minister.

TriciaF, we survived the yellow peril and reds under the bed , these were suppose to bring about the end of the world

I seem to remember that someone predicted not long ago that WW3 would start in the Middle East. Probably between Russia and the USA.
The situation in Syria currently has got those 2 together, let's hope and pray it doesn't all go bad.
Gog and Magog etc and the end of the world?
Sorry, feeling depressive today after a bad night.

Well, I'm simplistic because I certainly believe that our deterrent has done just that, and kept us safe for the past 70 years. No one is or has suggested that we fire it first, that of course is out of the question, but I do believe that the knowledge that if the worst happened the nation responsible can be assured that from a submarine deep in the ocean far away from these shores, they will regret such an action, and knowing that will, and probably has, concentrated the mind of countries that wish us harm.

soon, we are of completely different faiths, I didn't feel peace during the Iraq or Afghanistan wars, I feel no peace knowing Syria is being bombed ,

Christ and all that

Gracesgran Thu 01-Oct-15 13:47:49

I wonder if you believe in some sort of God given end-time soon.

You have to ask what would be left to defend if we are talking about nuclear. It has also been said that general thought is that when Prime Ministers write the letters that will allow the codes to be used in the event of a wipe-out most will have said the same or similar to JC - they just haven't told everyone.

I really is incredibly simplistic to believe that nuclear has kept us safe. I don't know how many remember the Bay of Pigs crisis but it was not the weapons that kept us safe it was diplomacy. Diplomacy and the change from the need to rule others have both added to our safety. I would also say that being able to see the rest of the world on our screens within minutes, and to see the outcomes of war has had at least as great an effect as the bomb.

Just as the right brainwashes us to believe there is no alternative to austerity they have brainwashed us to believe people behave in a particular way and the outcomes will always be the same. The idea that if you have a big stick at home no one will attack you is madness - and retaliation is pointless. If we have reached the point where someone wipes us out - that's it folks. Better by far to work towards the most stable world we can.

No I dont ffel under threat of war from America or France.
But neither do I just think today or short term, or even middle term.
Who knows what is coming our way in 20 years time.
No good then to say, "oh, we need such and such". The military just doesnt work in that way.
It is about foresight.

I barely worry about a thing Anniebach. God and all that.
But I sure as heck believe in preparation. Be prepared. The world is always changing. Always has, always will.

soontobe Thu 01-Oct-15 13:32:38

Or not appreciate it. Or be thankful for it. Big time.

Anniebach Thu 01-Oct-15 13:31:22

soon, you feel under threat of war from America and France ? you really troubled and frightened

soontobe Thu 01-Oct-15 13:30:53

You have had peace above your head. In the UK. That is what I am talking about. Never underestimate it.

soontobe Thu 01-Oct-15 13:28:55

I consider we defend ourselves against all countries. All of them.

soontobe Thu 01-Oct-15 13:27:17

Which 8 countries? Sorry, I am a bit lost. Or 9.

Anniebach Thu 01-Oct-15 13:24:27

No soon, not enough said, Iraq, Afghanistan to name just two, you think we are at peace because we bombed hell out of these countries , that isn't peace soon, it's war . Suppose it doesn't trouble you because you haven't been bombed , you son didn't die in Iraq or Afghanistan, tell the mothers of those who died we have had peace since 1945

Anniebach Thu 01-Oct-15 13:20:28

Ana, why do you think only nine countries think they need nuclear warfare?

Anniebach Thu 01-Oct-15 13:17:34

soon, who are we defending ourselves from? You must think one of the eight countries will attack us because you say we are defending ourselves from them ?

soontobe Thu 01-Oct-15 13:16:53

There has peace. There is peace. Since the nuclear stuff. Enough said.

Anya Thu 01-Oct-15 13:12:22

And in the one incident I can think of - the Bay of Pigs, it was Kruschov (?) who backed down when that fool FJK was flexing his muscles.

Anya Thu 01-Oct-15 13:09:51

How do you work that out S2B when the situation has never been put to the test? Russia is hardly going to launch a nuclear attack because we are not buying their vodka.

soontobe Thu 01-Oct-15 13:00:06

Anniebach, we defend with it right now.

Ana Thu 01-Oct-15 12:14:27

There would be warning that the bomb was on its way. That's the time to decide whether to press the button in retaliation - and the other side know that, which is why Trident is a deterrent.

Anniebach Thu 01-Oct-15 12:13:04

I do ask again, look at a film of the aftermath in Hiroshima and Nagasaki , do you really believe only those to the left in politics want rid of nuclear warfare?

Anniebach Thu 01-Oct-15 12:09:03

Do we have billions to spend on something that is useless , we couldn't attack or defend with it . If it will bring world peace why didn't we drop it on Iraq? Why didn't America?

Look at film of the aftermath of the bombing of .Hiroshima, if we are bombed would we be in a position to launch a defence ? We would have millions dead, millions dying, millions screaming as their skin peels off

Nuclear warfare is evil

whitewave Thu 01-Oct-15 11:58:28

margaret no problem smile it is my weird sense of humour!

whitewave Thu 01-Oct-15 11:56:17

petra be consoled that by no means is it those on the left who think like JC - it really isn't a left/right thing.
