Watching the news and there have been 2 separate incidents in Paris (one explosion near a football ground and one shoot out at a restaurant.). 4 dead so far. So awful. What is happening?

My heart goes out to France- including the signficant proportion who are peaceful Muslims- and still often treated like 2nd or 3rd class citizens- even after 2, 3, 4 generations in France- they will suffer hugely because of this.

My beautiful daughter is safe. She lives in Paris. Very shaken. She teaches in a university, which is such a worry. So terrible. Those poor people .

JamJar1 Sat 14-Nov-15 14:36:44

We would never be able to stop all attacks, we enjoy our way of life, our freedom. When the people out to commit these terrible acts are wearing suicide vests, quite prepared to die it must make it so much more difficult for the security services.

cctv may or may not prevent attrocities. But it must be a useful tool, especially after an event such as this.

I would imagine that intelligence uses cctv a lot.

whitewave Sat 14-Nov-15 14:22:15

I am not clear that cctv will prevent such atrocities.

Intelligence is the only thing that will stop them.

absentgrandma Sat 14-Nov-15 14:11:37

The French, as a nation which considers their privacy of paramount importance, loathe CCTV cameras, and I must say I agree with them. There has been much opposition to the installing of CCTV in the centre of Toulouse, but it seems inevitable. Maybe we have been living in a cosy fool's paradise and we all need to get used to being spied on for our own safety. But if we have nothing to hide... so what?

merlotgran Sat 14-Nov-15 13:46:57

This thread is about the killing of innocent people in Paris.

jackiekiel Sat 14-Nov-15 13:44:30

I used to think that cctv cameras and checking our emails was an infringement of our liberties but changed my mind some time ago. I'm sure that activities like these have prevented terrorist attacks. I wonder what people like Edward Snowden would think if their loved ones were affected by an incident that could have been picked up by security services listening in?

Anniebach Sat 14-Nov-15 13:43:26

rosesarered, I do not rant, this thread is about the killing of innocent people, not nit picking

nonnasusie Sat 14-Nov-15 13:36:14

I have a nephew with a pregnant wife living in Paris. I have just emailed them, I hope they are ok!!

MamaCaz Sat 14-Nov-15 13:33:33

sad

Jétais Charlie.

Je suis la France.

SusieB50 Sat 14-Nov-15 13:10:34

What a sad world we all live in now - my thoughts are with all the families and friends affected .But let's not blame immigration on this ,they are an evil few. We have dear friends in Paris I hope they are safe, - no word from them yet .

Daisyanswerdo Sat 14-Nov-15 12:47:38

Their religion tells them they will go to Paradise when they blow themselves up. Seems to me until they are disabused of this, we cannot expect change.

merlotgran Sat 14-Nov-15 12:44:20

The Western way of life embraces not just freedom in its literal sense but the right to enjoy our lives. ISIS will continue to target restaurants, concert halls and football stadia because they are easy pickings but we will not be cowed into submission because who would want to exist under a rule of terror?

As individuals there is little we can do other than to be vigilant and have faith in our intelligence service.

Liaise Sat 14-Nov-15 12:34:35

Along with the police cuts the border force is about to be cut - planes and ships. Who will protect us. Instead of sending money to countries who spend it on arms why do we not look after our own people and country.

Dillonsgranma Sat 14-Nov-15 12:27:26

I fear that france will declare war, and all hell will let loose.

Elegran Sat 14-Nov-15 12:14:56

They are doing their best to demoralise "the West". Please don't help them, anniebach

Bennan Sat 14-Nov-15 12:00:12

I agree with Alea and Soontobe in that nobody said anything about killing in other parts of the world being of less importance. Any killing of innocent people is to be deplored wherever and whenever it occurs. Isis has to be fought on every front until they are destroyed. There is no alternative! Paris yesterday, where tomorrow?

KatyK Sat 14-Nov-15 11:40:01

It's horrendous. I agree with you gilly . I don't believe people in the UK are vigilant enough. I know someone who recently saw an unattended holdall on the pavement outside a coffee shop and when she suggested to the staff that it could be suspicious, they treated her as if she was mad.

Alea Sat 14-Nov-15 11:38:11

Anniebach. I think that your last paragraph might be better answered on a thread of its own.
Though I dont think I would want to try answering it today

You know I frequently disagree with you Soontobe wink, but that is one of the most sensible remarks I have read and especially your second sentence which more people might bear in mind.

JamJar1 Sat 14-Nov-15 11:23:05

I think the UK has been awake for a while. We have been under the highly likely an attack is imminent warning a number of months now. As I believe were France. Senseless and shocking.

gillybob Sat 14-Nov-15 11:08:57

I agree with Greyduster this should be a giant wake up call for the UK where sadly it is only a matter of time before we have something similar in our own doorstep. Pure evil.

henetha Sat 14-Nov-15 10:53:31

There is absolutely no excuse for the actions of these evil men last night in Paris. My heart goes out to the people in this beautiful city.

Katek Sat 14-Nov-15 10:31:00

I have no words.

Bellanonna Sat 14-Nov-15 10:17:20

Yes that's a positive thought soon. I'm sure we're all reeling in horror from this devastating news.
