I'm sorry you see the slaughter that took place in France and subsequent comments as a knee jerk reaction. Obviously empathy on such a scale to some is being seen as such as they are in agreement with you, however to others it is merely the collective human nature of showing support and empathy to those who are not friends nor family but never the less part of what we feel as a civilised society we endeavour to belong to. Each to his own .

You may believe that the UK is going to be like feudal Japan and there is a distinct urge to kill all foreigners but I find that a rather stupid comment. I think the rhetoric has been in the opposite direction by the majority and I hope not to be proven mistaken.

You say the media and the population are becoming more right wing everyday. You are displaying a well trodden path of the left to try to belittle anybody that does not agree with you and yours line of thought. It is a pathetic attempt to infer you are of a superior intelligence and everybody else who has a different opinion to you have such a tiny brain they only rely on media coverage which because it does not concur with your beliefs therefor must be right wing. You may be surprised to know that the majority of people are not brainwashed by the media but are intelligent enough to decypher and filter from varying sources and do not rely in total on the media / political persuasion to establish the truth. Sometimes it is not what is said by some media outlets that becomes as interesting as what is , so I will agree there is a bias by the media both to the left and right.

Calling somebody a do gooder is tantamount to being rude dependant on the 'context' of how the term is used, especially when the term has not been written nor spoken but somebody decides to take things out of context and feels victimised.

I too have friends from different cultures, religions and race, most of us do but I never even get it one moment of thought that what happened in Paris would make me feel any different toward them, why would I. I sure as hell don't think of myself as a do gooder , I wouldn't even put the two things together I am merely a friend.

He also sent me a short message the other day (which I have lost) but referring to those who don't want any refugees here, he reminded them that this is not the first time that a needy Middle Eastern couple (pregnant wife) has been turned away on the grounds that there was no room for them. I agree with a lot of your post Granny23 especially the part where you say.... They didn't become your friends because you approved..... etc.

I too have friends of various beliefs, nationalities and beliefs but one thing we do all share in common is that we each care for other people. We care for each other and each other's feelings.

I could never be friends with anyone who didn't share my basic values and the problem we have with IS and the likes, is that they do not share our values. I suspect that they feel no love for either themselves or their fellow human beings.

I think I largely agree with those points.
And I think your friend is right to point out, or perhaps remind others that there are some people in the world who are out for revenge. Or even power, or stopping themselves having egg on their face, if you see what I mean.

My knees don't work like they used to do, arthritis will do that, but you know after the events in Paris, I could almost be glad because it means that I cannot engage in the type of knee jerk reaction that many have done over the last few days.

I have said already that I don't have answers, but I do have friends of different religions or none at all, friends of different nationalities, different coloured skin, different political views, they didn't become friends because I happened to approve of any of these features of them and they certainly won't become my enemies because of them either.
To do that IS to let terrorists gain a victory, it is to let me become like them, I've never had the highest opinion of myself, but it's better that that, and if that makes me a do-gooder, so be it!

For those poor people in Syria,
Being crucified, thrown off buildings, skinned alive, raped, beheaded, kept in cages and used as sex slaves, some little more than children. All done by ISIS. The petition could be presented to Parliament, and perhaps we could then show our support by starting to join in with France, Russia, the US and Iran by bombing the ISIS strongholds.There are worst things than a quick death by bombing, and I have mentioned them in this post.

Many of the Syrians have already left. (sorry to state the obvious) So why couldn't we get the rest out?

IS strongholds are outside Syria. That's what we are bombing. Not Damascus.
