Clearing drains regularly would help There is one grating near the end of my road which doesn't take away any water - it is always clogged with leaves from the tree that overhangs it, and the water just flows over the top, or lies in a pool.

Clear out conduits and drains in towns. Stop paving over gardens for parking or patios. Public car parks could have permeable surfaces laid rather than Tarmac. Stop clearing moorland and heath. And everything rosesarered says. These aren't hugely expensive capital projects, they are mostly routine maintenance.

A lot of different things need to be done to ease flooding in this country, as other posters have pointed out. trees planted, stop the straightening of rivers, dredge or don't dredge certain rivers or parts of rivers, stop building on floodplains, encourage farmers and private landowners to clear out ditches.until all these things and more are done we will see flooding, and even when they are done, we must expect now and then to still see some flooding, either from the sea or excessive rainfall.
ALL governments, for the last 20 years or more have simply tinkered at the edges.

The floods year after year are costing the country untold millions. Spend half that amount up front on defence and maintenance and bingo! It is what all intelligent governments do.

Jingl, there is no lack of money in this country, just a lack of will to spend it in the right places.

Cost cutting in something that then results in the govt. having to then spend much more than they saved makes no sense.And you can't put a sum on the distress caused to thousands of people. Why are so many people being so complacent about it all?? Have we been brainwashed in some sort of way, I wonder?

I know it's down to money, it is also down to priorities , making the wealthy wealthier being this governments to priority

If a givernment makes cuts in flood defences they should have the courage to face and speak to the victims of floods

Blaming the government for poor maintenance to flood defences and cuts to capital budget seems quite a rational thing to me

Is that why TB wanted the job as Middle East Peace Envoy? Did he think it would help him on his way to Heaven? What happens if you fail miserably to bring peace and just swan around in expensive yachts and hotels instead? Are you then prevented from going through the Pearly Gates?
