I'm sure most of you have read in the news what Justin Welby has to say about immigration.
I've just read this quote on another Forum, it's from George Orwell.
"In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act"

Penstemmon Thu 24-Mar-16 23:47:17

It is always important to discuss difficult issues. The trick is to do it with compassion, knowledge and without anger!

If we can only see one perspective, have only part of the information and are just ranting in frustration/fear/anger it does not get heard and can lead to accusations of bigotry, even if it is not meant that way! So best not play into the hands of those who want to shut down legitimate debate.

No political party has a clean sheet in this area so best we draw a line and look forward and become solution directed and not hate fuelled!

petra Wed 23-Mar-16 12:22:53

Penstemmon. It's ok to talk about these 'issues' now because Saint Anthony has deemed it so ( in the news yesterday) funny that he didn't think it was ok when in power. Same as Gorden Brown when he called that lady a bigot when she spoke up about her concens with immigration.

I love the vibrancy of London's multilingual/cultural feel. It is amazing to sit on the tube and count how many different languages you hear. Some are people who have emigrated to the UK and some are tourists. It is the same in most capital / big cities in Europe. The issue of how a society manages the infrastructure to meet the needs of the citizens (old and new) is something we should be discussing without fear. If there is a sudden rise in demand because of world situations if the systems had been well managed and strategically planned in the first place it would be less of an issue. We must discuss peoples/our fears of work/health/education but we need to do it without being hateful and bitter to those in desperate circumstances. There are many economic migrants from all over the world, including white Christian 'first world' countries. They also live in houses go to shools and GPs etc. Unfortunately we deem unable to look at immigration dispassionately and the immigrants who "are not like us" are the ones who the media target and end up fuelling racist attitudes that then make legitimate isdues difficult to raise.

durhamjen Tue 22-Mar-16 20:39:23

He didn't say that, petra. He said fearing migration is not racist, but we could do more to help and take in more than the 20,000 over the next five years.
Strange how people read what they want into comments, and miss the most important bits.

Ana Tue 22-Mar-16 20:18:35

Yvette Cooper and Nichola Sturgeon offered to house migrants. Have they?

petra Tue 22-Mar-16 20:15:14

Anniebach. I think that was before he saw the light. As in not taking in more migrants.

Anniebach Tue 22-Mar-16 19:46:22

Really Rosesarered, yet he got flack on this forum for saying we were not taking in a fair number of immigrants, he was mocked for offering a house

durhamjen Tue 22-Mar-16 19:21:25

Three Syrian boys have arrived in the UK to join their families. They were accompanied by two MPs.

A link to the story, and to welcome them if you want to.

rosesarered Thu 17-Mar-16 18:46:08

Having just read it, think it was an entirely sensible view by Justin Welby,
anniebach your comments make me think of the old saying 'He/she could start an arguement in an empty room.' There is nothing at all to dislike in his interview.

nigglynellie Thu 17-Mar-16 18:26:23

I don't think he has, but he certainly should do. Maybe he's waiting to see what JC has to say about it?!! I think he's got a long wait there and may have to jump the gun!! I might pen a letter in that direction and see what happens! Will keep you posted if you're interested.

Anniebach Thu 17-Mar-16 16:39:07

Has the Arch Bishop made comments on Muslim women? I thought he spoke of immigrants and racism

nigglynellie Thu 17-Mar-16 15:57:17

And the muslim ladies dj? any thoughts about them?!!

durhamjen Wed 16-Mar-16 20:29:34

9:30am - 11:00am
Westminster Hall debate
UNHCR and pathways for admission of Syrian refugees

Such old news that there was a Westminster Hall debate on it today, which was mentioned in Caroline Lucas's article, if you had bothered to read it, Petra.
I'm surprised you even bothered to respond. Of course, you will always take the opportunity to criticise me, rather than the government which causes these problems in the first place.

Ana Wed 16-Mar-16 20:19:40

Hardly, ab - the Muslim Women Councillors thread is completely devoid of left-wing input apart from whitewave's contribution. One can hardly 'stalk' a non-existent element...

Anniebach Wed 16-Mar-16 20:17:58

Ana, I have just posted on the Germany thread , sorry cannot tell you all the threads I haven't posted on, I just pop on here for a quick break from transcribing smile

Anniebach Wed 16-Mar-16 20:14:15

Gosh, do you make notes of who posts on which threads Ana, you must do, creepy, makes one feel one is being stalked

Ana Wed 16-Mar-16 20:07:37

It's OK for you two to ignore the thread about Muslim Councillors though? hmm

Anniebach Wed 16-Mar-16 20:02:30

It may not be todays news but it cannot be ignored , I fear we have become a ' oh not more on those people ' readers, viewers, listeners .

Each time I see these people on the news I am more and more troubled by our reaction here in Europe to them. We rant about the war zone these children live in, we condemn ISIS , we condemn the boat owners who transport them across seas and I ask - are we so different when we are so concerned with the effect on our schools, hospitals etc we are willing to let them die in vermin infected tents , I think not

petra Wed 16-Mar-16 19:49:31

Durhamjen. Do you think that your the only one who reads newspapers or watches the news. This is old news. I thought you were posting something we didn't know about.

Caroline Lucas has been to Calais. This is her report on what she found at Calais and Dunkirk.
These are the sort of immigrants we should be allowing into the UK.
Anyone know how many have been allowed in this year?

Ana Sun 13-Mar-16 20:59:56

I corrected my first statement to say that it was an interview, not a speech, durhamjen (if you bothered to read that far).

I'm not sure why you're assuming that no one on this thread apart from Lazigirl read the Guardian article before you posted a link to it. I certainly had, which is why I knew where that 'friends and supporters he didn't bargain for' came from.

durhamjen Sun 13-Mar-16 20:59:09

theconversation.com/is-it-really-not-racist-to-oppose-immigration-56173

durhamjen Sun 13-Mar-16 20:50:55

I did, Ana. That's where I got the quote from about finding ways to take our share of the load.

Believe it or not, your link was to an article written by a journalist. It wasn't a speech. It was a journalist's interpretation of an interview, not just a QA session.

Obviously you did not think that my quotation was the most important sentence, but I did. The man who wrote the Guardian article obviously interpreted it differently to the ones who wrote about it in the Sun and the Express.
All I am showing is that there is another way to look at it, the Guardian way.

Ana Sun 13-Mar-16 18:01:36

Of course, you could always read my link of 10.40 yesterday to read what he actually said, and not just some journalist's interpretation of it.

durhamjen Sun 13-Mar-16 17:58:47

Lazigirl, did you write the Guardian article?
