Female Genital Mutilation, now Breast Ironing young girls.

I'm sick to death of reading/listening to news stories of physical abuse of young girls. We all know of Genital Mutilation but am I alone in never heard of BREAST IRONING?

Sky News is running coverage of yet another heinous abuse of young girls who endure ' Breast Ironing ', the pounding and massaging of pubescent girls breasts using 'hard' and ' heated' objects to try and stop breast development or make them disappear. .For goodness sake pure bloody barbarism, yet again. Well done Sky and those raising a voice to make it illegal in the UK.

This is predominantly an African issue, Cameroon but it is happening to young girls in the UK. I was so shocked I looked on google and I was shocked to see so much has been written and known about it. Well known UK newspapers over past years have written about breast ironing ' Where have I been'. I genuinely have not heard of it.

This makes me cry, thinking of my own 9 year old grandchild and the suffering some children and women live with . Why do we put with this in the UK? It must be stopped and as with Female Genital Mutilation the UK must make it clear it will not be tolerated here, it is physical abuse verging on torture. I have put a link up to the Sky News because others are too horrific to view.

Off topic, I know, but did anyone follow the case a couple of weeks ago where a 'man' was sent to prison for enslaving his wife ( she was from Pakistan).
She escaped once and went to the police. They took her back to him.
The policeman said that he didn't know that slavery was a crime.
That says it all!!!! What bloody hope is there.

Ana

I apologise if that's how my post came over. Of course I know you and everybody else who has taken the trouble to post is outraged by this.

I think it has hit a nerve with me today. wine

I don't know why I'm being addressed as though I don't take the problem seriously - of course I do!

All I've said is that it isn't easy to eradicate ingrained cultural practices and it seems that it's difficult enough to even get one successful prosecution for FGM, never mind breast ironing. I don't know what the answer is, but whaat's in place now doesn't seem to be working.

Remember reading about it at university. So it was in the public domain all those years ago and yet it hasn't been wiped out in the UK even after all this time.

Last year some time there was a discussion on LBC about genital mutilation of girls. I think it was James O'Brien. This is v. shocking (by my standards anyway):
A muslim man came on and said most muslim women had it done before marriage. Why? To prevent masturbation.
Even James was stopped in his tracks.

Most of these mutilations, if the girl is school age are done in the summer holidays. I don't have to explain why.

"What is it with sex with these people"
Repression.

Ana

It is known of and schools, doctors, hospitals must surely to God see these cases .

As I have said the government updated the FGM Law in 2015 and it must look at including Breast Ironing and any other barbaric cultural procedures. Social Workers/Hospitals/Doctors must report cases if and when they see them and the law enforcement must prosecute and b----r political correctness or worry about upsetting those of a different culture. It is ridiculous we even read this is happening. What a state of affairs . sad

Ana Sorry if i confused anyone by saying "easy to stop" I was referring to the birth defects caused by marrying first cousins.

Ana Sun 10-Apr-16 18:57:58

I agree that every little helps, petra, but I still dispute your claim that these practices are 'so easy to stop'.

It goes on in secret, the people that do it to these poor young girls believe it's the right thing to do and it's going to be very. very difficult to change the mindset of their culture.

Thank you for giving the name of the charity, I'll certainly have a look at the website.

whitewave Sun 10-Apr-16 18:55:11

What is it with sex with these people? They seem obsessed with it.

petra Sun 10-Apr-16 18:53:56

Ana Well, for a start, talk about it whenever you feel you can. Get the word out there. Just here on this forum we have spread the word, it's like a butterfly's wing.
I personally donate to a charity called * Forward* These charities are so poor, so even if people only donated £5 it's a help.

whitewave Sun 10-Apr-16 18:50:49

Education might help, but meanwhile.......

Ana Sun 10-Apr-16 18:44:50

Yes. But still not 'so easy' to stop. How would you go about doing that?

petra Sun 10-Apr-16 18:38:17

Ana it's all mutilation

Ana Sun 10-Apr-16 18:11:04

It isn't so easy to stop though, petra. Just as FGM isn't easy to stop. Look how many prosecutions there have been for that.

petra Sun 10-Apr-16 18:06:10

Lullydully Read up on it. It will shock you rigid. This is another 'cultural issue' that we don't talk about. As if it's not bad enough that we have all these children suffering when it's so easy to stop, it's costing this country millions in disability payments.

LullyDully Sun 10-Apr-16 17:55:04

I hope that is true petra. In Birmingham the special schools had l lot of children who had cousin parents. Also the disabled children were married off to some young girs from villages back home who did not know who she was marrying.

petra Sun 10-Apr-16 17:54:50

Well get the word out there, all of you. Apologies if that sounded a bit strong but I'm sick to the bloody teeth of all softly softly approach.
Contact your MP. Educate him/her, because you can be sure most of them have never heard of breast ironing.

Luckygirl Sun 10-Apr-16 17:49:48

Bugger cultural sensitivities - this is GBH and child abuse and we already have the laws to stamp on it and must do so with a vengeance.

petra Sun 10-Apr-16 17:46:34

Thankfully a lot of the Muslim community are becoming aware of the first cousin problem Re birth defects.

Elrel Sun 10-Apr-16 17:42:26

What? POGS you're not alone, I'd not heard of BI before.

petra Sun 10-Apr-16 17:42:13

POGS Votes, simple as. Blair allowed thousands of uneducated people from Pakistan and India knowing that they would be easy to manipulate.
Local political activists would get the local leaders on side with all sorts of ' sweeteners' and provided the the votes were produced, nothing would be said about the 'cultural differences' Don't forget many of these people couldn't speak or read English.

POGS Sun 10-Apr-16 17:26:34

Petra

I fear you are correct. My problem is now we are more aware of FGM and Breast Ironing if the UK government and our politicians do not make both illegal, FGM is, then shame on them all. I hope this latest attempt to raise the subject doesn't loose traction but again I fear it will, just look at how many have posted regarding it on here. I hope Sky really go to town on this and keep the momentum up and the British press take up the issue again.

How the hell did we become so b----y impotent in the UK we let 'cultural sensitivities' become more important than protecting children from inhumane behaviour? Some dislike the term 'political correctness' being used but ye gods what else has caused us to basically show complicity by our inaction to report it/ prosecute those who do it.

petra Sun 10-Apr-16 16:02:48

POGS Much as it hurts me to say: we can't stop this barbarity. It's been in our country too long and all the authorities who could do something turn a blind eye because of 'cultural sensitivities.'
Just the same as forcing your daughter to marry her first cousin knowing that her chances of having a severely disabled child is wrong. But there you go, too late now, the stable door has been opened for too long.
