Another concern which may at first glance seem insignificant is that the ratio between men and women is not exactly 50/50:

qz.com/335183/heres-why-men-on-earth-outnumber-women-by-60-million

A slight percentage difference means 60 million more males than females, quite a significant number if concentrated in just a few countries which seem to have a preference for sons rather than daughters.

Thank you smile

janeainsworth Sun 17-Apr-16 19:13:56

Jane It's possible that 1% of the population owning 50% of the wealth is not incompatible with 7% owning 84%.
Any mathematicians out there? smile

Jane10 Sun 17-Apr-16 18:48:52

Thanks janea. I was obviously having a 'duh?' Moment. I thought it was 7% of the population who owned 84% of the wealth. We had a theatre company called the 7:84 company. That was a few years ago of course. Clearly the ratios have changed.

Just sent it to my GS

I thought it was interesting that 1 person was starving but 14 didn't have clean water.

janeainsworth Sun 17-Apr-16 14:32:27

Jane10
It said if there were100 people on earth, 1 person would control 50% if the money.
That just means that 1% of all the people on earth control 50% of the money.
So if there are 7 billion people on earth, it means that half the world's wealth is shared between 70 million people.
It would be interesting to know wherevthey all live, and what the distribution of wealth between those 70 million people is.

Jane10 Sun 17-Apr-16 14:11:49

Interesting! Did I pick it up wrong but did it say that one person controls 50% of the money? If so who are they?

Gracesgran Sun 17-Apr-16 14:11:48

My biggest surprise was how Christians outnumber other religions. I didn't think anything of it - I was just surprised smile That "why didn't I know that" question came to mind.

Alea Sun 17-Apr-16 13:45:01

Well done Gracesgran!
