No , of course not everyone of the 52% based their vote on immigration or race etc, and I don't think anyone has said that have they? But some people did, what that % is can't be measured, as few people admit to it. But there was plenty of focus on immigration in the campaign. I did hear people say the"didn't mind the Polish, but didn't like Muslims" as their reason for voting leave, and several jibes at Polish shops etc. don't need to go over all that again,But everyone agrees that reason for voting either way are varied as Petra, her friend and everyone else must know.

There will always be people who think like that suzied, but there has been those on this forum who equate a 'leave' vote with being racist, uneducated, stupid, poor and so on.

I've been shocked by the comments of just a few, hitting out in anger that the vote didn't go 'their' way. Shocked and disgusted.

As for the idea that people didn't understand the implications of their vote, either way, well I think the majority of 'leavers' and 'remainers'' knew exactly what they were voting for.

suzie, you seem to be equating dislike of too fast immgration and racism. The two are not the same. Wanting to control immigration is (a) not wanting to stop it altogether, and (b) not racist.

Why do people seem unwilling or unable to accept that point bags?

No Im not saying concern about immigration is the same as racism, but to whip up (untrue) fears that millions of Turks are coming or having a poster of Syrian refugees isn't far away from justifying those who are racist in their views. To blame immigrants for all the social ills is also moving criticism away from government austerity cuts in schools, hospitals etc.

So how do the people who voted Leave think their lives will improve?

Just met some friends, who told us that they were going to vote out and the reason they gave was immigration. However we saw them today and they announced that they had in fact voted remain because after doing some reading they realised that the "Muslims" would still be coming to the UK. So racist sentiments, which initially prompted them to vote out. They said they had a lot of friends who voted out because of the "Muslims"!!!!!

The ridiculous thing is that we live in a part if Britain where to see someone that is not white, whilst not unusual, it is clear that they are in a tiny minority. My daughter lives in a Sussex village which I don't think, now that the Indian restaurant has closed down has a single ethnic minority living there.

I must be hopelessly naive. It had never even crossed my mind that some people were voting Leave because of 'the Muslims'...(as opposed to immigration per se)

I know that a lot of people, when talking about immigration are not talking about Eastern Europeans, but Muslims.

This may have already been said, but it struck me today.

The voting paper was very clear Leave or remain, no more details than that.

So it would be quite within the definition for us to leave the EU but continue to be part of the single market AND accept full freedom of movement of labour. Not what the leave campaign intended, but there was not that qualification on the voting paper.

But I think that whoever leads the negotiations knows that it was immigration that was the key issue, so will try to avoid free movement, even if it means we are all worse off economically. One of my elderly relatives voted out because "there are too many black people" in her area. She is going to be disappointed.

it looks very likely that it will be the remain camp that will have the job of taking us out, and I suspect big business will bring a lot of pressure to bear on the government to keep in the single market.

Had Boris had the courage to lead it, things might have been different, but now. Gove has shown his other side and I doubt anyone will trust him now.

I still can't get out of my mind the 'We want our country back' posters that were emblazoned across Yorkshire last week. It can be argued (cleverly) that it was meant from the bureaucrats in Brussels but the subliminal message was aimed at immigrants. I felt sick seeing them now and in years to come it will be the single most memory from this referendum. The fact that we were visiting Fountains Abbey at the time, a world heritage sight made it even worse.

If that's true, how can anybody say that the people who voted Leave knew what they were doing.

How does anyone know the people in the ukip poster queue were Syrian refugees? They could have been from anywhere including Britain (i.e. British citizens, immgrants form an earlier time). The queue is far too neat and artistic to be anything other than a campaigning gimmick in my view. So treat it as one and ignore it.

No thatbags that was taken by a journalist of Syrian refugees approaching a countries border with Greece and was taken over the past year. I am not sure of the country. The journalist was furious of the use made of his photo.
