I would put my money on the £ rallying. Maybe not next week/ month, but it's going to happen.

The French have never forgiven us for Calais. That was a joke in case some of you didn't get it.

Written on the heart of Mary Tudor! The only hostility I ever found in France was to Germans! An old chap in a Tabac actually refused to serve me, until he realised I was English. I do speak French moderately well, so any misunderstandings were soon cleared up, but I've never met any anti British feeling in over 50 years.

Grayling is a BREXITER and he's been Theresa May's campaign manager. If I were a betting person, I'd put money him getting one of the top jobs.

So are Priti Patel and John Whittingdale.

Thank goodness the country can now move on and start negotiations asap. love or loathe the ref, result, we need to move forward with the best deal we can get.

It seems to me that a lot of people voted brexit as a protest vote agaist the government and that they will, unwittingly, get what they want because the government have realised how much of an undercurrent of unrest was in this country, so they will have to address those issues to prevent some sort of civil war. So it will have worked and people will then assume it was the EU causing all of the problems all along, not the government and it's austerity cuts. Along with the fact that a lot of brexiters and remainers will be watching the government like hawks to make sure they stick to their pledges [the ones that they made with the assumption that they weren't going to win].

I wish Jonathan Swift was still alive...

They meet the English mostly on holiday and experience them as neither friendly nor courteous.
Well, if standing politely in queues, not shoving disabled people out of the way, not claiming sunbeds with towels from 6am (banned now in some resorts), not deliberately throwing water over other people by the pool, smiling and saying guten morgen is not friendly or courteous I don't know what else to do.

Sadly, that has been our experience also on holiday, despite our overtures of friendliness. Very sad to experience.
I think a poster was just saying what she had experienced, not saying ner ner tit for tat, unless, of course, she is not allowed to relate personal experiences on here.

I did have a German boyfriend when I was at college; DF, having been in two world wars, welcomed him to our home, saying the past was the past and we should move on.

If I thought a child of mine had behaved as you say they did on a school trip then they would have received a dressing down from me, I can tell you dd.

I n the mesntime we have a vacuum created by Brexit.

It seems to me too Tegan - in fact it is increasingly perfectly clear that for a large % it was a protest vote that had nothing to do with Europe, but with 'austerity'.

Tragically, it is those who have been suffering the most from the above, who are likely to suffer the most from the consequences fo Brexit - dangerous times indeed. Whether we want to 'move on' or not ...

I had plenty of experience of giving dressings down!

It wasn't during school trips, but on exchange visits, when German pupils came into school. The British pupils taking part in the exchanges were equally embarrassed and ashamed of other pupils.

I experienced anti-German attitudes throughout my whole career, although I did find that people were becoming generally less xenophobic, especially as a number of parents had worked in Germany.

Lots of British towns (even small ones) are twinned with Germany, and have exchange groups as I am sure you must know, and are really good organisations which promote understanding.

So, if the British abroad are perceived as unfriendly and discourteous by Germans, why do so many Germans behave badly when on holiday in, say, Spain where the twain may meet?

Puzzling.

A staunch brexiter friend of my ex's who lives Huddersfield way has just lost his job as his company is relocating due to the referendum [something to do with BMW motorbikes].

Unfortunately, lots of towns are now stopping their twinning links through lack of funds and interest.

Compared with the commitment of French and German communities to their twinning arrangement, the amount of support given by British twin towns is pathetic.

I used to arrange a school exchange with a school in our twin town. When we went to Germany, we were treated like honoured guests. There was a reception at the town hall, a speech by the mayor and we came away with all sorts of gifts. The town also sponsored the trip financially. Our mayor really couldn't be bothered and even wanted to charge us for a reception and his presence. The twinning association was nothing more than a clique.

I'm not interested in stereotypes.

I suppose, like many other voluntary organisations, volunteers and enthusiasts are becoming older and less able, and younger people don't seem to have the time or even the will to want to work non-paid for charities, or for groups like this.

It is quite worrying in fact, especially the lack of enthusiasm shown by your mayor and council.
