Being blamed

I can honestly say that in making vote my only consideration was for the future of my children and grandchildren which meant I voted against my own concerns. Anybody else insulted by the blame our generation are getting for the result of the vote?

That's a classic case of whataboutery!

The referendum could have been done under different terms, eg. a clear majority with minimum turnout, giving 16 year olds a vote, allowing all residents to vote, etc.

Haven't all parties in power at some time or other? But this one was seen as a vote-catcher and there were enough people banging on about it to make it imperative. It didn't have to be so early, though.

daphnedill Sat 25-Jun-16 17:42:19

They've squirmed their way out of other promises!

Ana Sat 25-Jun-16 17:40:40

We had to have a referendum because it was promised in the Conserative manifesto, so they could hardly get out of it...

I am so angry with this dreadful result and feel ashamed to be English. I am a Conservative voter but never again will I vote for a party that favours the small-minded and well-heeled and capitalises from fear and bigotry. Their dislike of the EU is founded in the belief that they are ordained by God to rule this country. This decision to leave is their fault; the referendum was not asked for (or even understood) by swathes of the population. May God forgive them because I will not.

daphnedill Sat 25-Jun-16 17:27:29

Be as cynical as you like! What do 'experts' know!

Data has been collected by many organisations about voting intentions and every single survey over the last few years has shown consistent attitudes towards the EU.

lindaww.
And who will these children work for if businesses and commerce pull out of little britain.

daphnedill Sat 25-Jun-16 16:23:20

However these particular figures were compiled, they're consistent with a number of surveys over the last year or so.

The key factor is educational qualifications (NOT intelligence)and younger people have more opportunities than older people (certainly those over about 70). My generation (I'm 61) was the supposed to be a 'golden age' for education (grammar school followed by free university), but only for a minority.

I posted an almost identical post a week or so before the referendum and was shouted down.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 25-Jun-16 16:15:01

Sorry. Didn't see crun's post. No exit poll where I voted.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 25-Jun-16 16:12:41

Alygran I wondered the same thing. There were no xit polls and voting is confidential. How can they know?

Stansgran Sat 25-Jun-16 15:57:04

Is that all?

LindaWW Sat 25-Jun-16 15:55:29

I think the younger generation will live to thank us. Their future looks pretty bleak already and if Spain, Portugal , Greece etc. is anything to go by, being in the EU is not exactly where I'd like to be as I went out into the world of work etc.

crun Sat 25-Jun-16 15:49:19

A nationwide exit poll on 23.6.16. Sample size 12369.

Maggiemaybe Sat 25-Jun-16 15:39:22

Not insulted, no, but annoyed that those of us who voted remain are being lumped in with the 60%. We're not one homogenous self-centred lump shuffling and grumbling towards eternity with no thought for anything but our own interests. We're made up of individuals like every other age group.

Anyway, it doesn't matter now how long it takes for the Brexit majority to disappear. We're out.

Alygran Sat 25-Jun-16 15:21:02

Statistics, damn statistics......How is this data compiled? Is it on a telephone or exit poll? Where and when was it done and what was the sample size?

WilmaKnickersfit Sat 25-Jun-16 15:07:11

From the link jings posted, a picture paints a thousand words - click it see the details.

merlotgran Sat 25-Jun-16 14:53:55

Those of us who were young when we voted to remain in the Common Market in 1975 should be thanked for giving the country something to winge about vote on.

JessM Sat 25-Jun-16 14:46:24

#BlameCameronNotYourGran - because he was completely responsible for this cock-up. And because blaming grandmothers is ageist and sexist. And because the turnout was not high amongst the young - so it's 75% of the ones who cared. Not 75% of those eligible to vote.
And because it's more about education not age - and the young have much more and better education on average than the over 60s did.

Joelsnan Sat 25-Jun-16 14:34:43

Sadly many of the give it me now generation have also not grown out of the juvenile 'I hate my parents' phase...They too will grow old smile

Elegran Sat 25-Jun-16 14:32:21

We'd have been vilified then for causing mass incomvenience to younger generations at such a fraught time.
