GO has resigned from the government
Philip Hammond appointed Chancellor

Anya Fri 15-Jul-16 07:46:03

This isn't going to be a popular point of view, but the latest antics from the junior doctors, rejecting by a slim majority an agreement which has been thrashed out with the BMA, does perhaps lend some credence to Hunt's earlier suggestion that they were not willing t meet him half way. All this talk about 'patient safety' when asked to cover weekend shifts, is starting to look more like greed. Junior doctors these days have it far, far easier than their predecessors. So perhaps it need Hunt to face them down.

As far as Boris goes, his parliamentary colleagues see him as an intelligent man, and dispute his buffoonery, I see no reason to underestimate him.

Boris is what I'd call a wild card. I hope with all my heart he confounds us all - and his opposite numbers around the world, and makes a success of it. The Russians will like his first name at least.
David Davis was the Brexiter who most impressed me during the campaign - even though I voted to remain. He is a sound choice I think. I hope he gets on with Boris.
Philip Hammond inspires more confidence than Osborne. However, my daughter told me that GO had advised Cameron not to have a referendum.

Did you see the picture and listen to the broadcast about Phil Hammond by Richard Madeley?

Hammond has denied that he was a goth at school and said he was reading the Financial Times not the Guardian.

David Davis has been spouting rubbish about how the negotiations will be completed. Being derided. Does not take a degree in economics to know for instance that trade negotiations can't be completed in 12-24 months.

I was appalled to see Hunt still in charge of the NHS. I can only assume she's said "you've produced this mess, you sort it out"

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 14-Jul-16 22:05:55

I think the PM has been quite clever. Every Brexit supporter in the Cabinet has been given a remit that includes an element connected with the repercussions of leaving the EU. It definitely smacks of letting them get on with it. This might seem like a risky approach, but with no viable opposition party, I think Theresa May is playing the long game. Commentators are saying the sacked ministers could cause trouble behind the scenes, especially as the government only has a small majority. I can see Osborne and Gove doing something like that. My main concern right now is what Hammond will make of the economy and if Green will change the plans for cutting benefits.

I am confused though why she left Hunt in charge of the NHS. I can only think she's given him strict instructions on what needs to happen in the immediate future.

Suggest they set up a sailing club?

Nana3 Thu 14-Jul-16 21:28:54

What will she do to help people in flood areas I'm wondering.

Jalima Thu 14-Jul-16 21:01:23

Anya every cloud hmm
Or in this case every silver lining has a cloud (the corn cockle).

Jalima Thu 14-Jul-16 20:57:56

See Mummy Leadsom has rural affairs
With a bit of luck, she'll be kept busy visiting County Shows
All those lovely little lambs, calves and kids (the goaty kind grin)

Jalima Thu 14-Jul-16 20:55:25

From the Independent - a map of all the countries Boris has insulted!
Some of them are pretty good at insults themselves! eg Australia grin

Nana3 Thu 14-Jul-16 20:53:50

Farmers set to make a lot of money selling land for fracking here in the NW. I know one who has already done it for testing. I am worried, Leadsome supports farmers not the environment. It's a serious issue in my area. I have a feeling she won't care about the North.

Anya Thu 14-Jul-16 20:53:45

Jalima it was the UK who held out for the option that EU countries could use some of the CAP finding for environmental improvements. This included re-planting hedgerows (many of which were originally ripped out in the early days of CAP as were marshy area drained!) and planting wild flowers on field margins to attract pollinators.

Jalima Thu 14-Jul-16 20:49:18

I think these pretty field edges where wild flowers are allowed to grow, might have come about due to the EU. I hope we don't lose them now.
I'm not sure if it was due to the EU, the BBC promoting it via the Big Lottery Fund, or a nationwide 100 year memorial to WW1.

However, I have just scattered some corn cockle seeds on a patch of lawn - am I going to have to weed them out shock?

Got rid of the climate change dept. been pretty much a complete waste of money of course as Mr "Greenest government ever" did as little as possible in that regard. The Green Deal was ill conceived and expired soon after its birth. They cut subsidies to renewables and reduced the obligation on the energy companies to put money into insulating the houses of poor people. Not even one feeble cheer.

NotTooOld Thu 14-Jul-16 19:02:42

Why leave Hunt with Health? Surely too much ill feeling there, it needs a new approach. I think TM wants Boris where she can keep an eye on him but from afar. He might turn out well as he has connections in Europe (remember him on 'Who do you think you are?') and I believe he speaks French - also Latin, of course! Also, I bet he can be charming when he wants to be.

Granny23 Thu 14-Jul-16 18:56:11

What a knowledgeable lot you are on GN! Yep, not written by, but published by lovable Boris who obviously concurred with the sentiments.

daphnedill Thu 14-Jul-16 18:39:36

My guess is Boris. It's a poem by James Michie and was published in the Spectator. Boris was editor for a while.

Elegran Thu 14-Jul-16 18:22:58

Don't tell me it is David Mundell! If it is I hope it was a comic poem written as a schoolboy with tongue firmly in cheek..

durhamjen Thu 14-Jul-16 18:21:02

Boris? He likes insulting anyone.
Or the Scottish secretary? Wouldn't be him - he'd have been found out by now.

Granny23 Thu 14-Jul-16 17:59:12

Can you guess which member of the new Cabinet published this poem?

MargaretX Thu 14-Jul-16 16:47:29

I thought her speech too detailed for the occasion. Sounded a lot like ED Miliband.
I think Boris is for Africa, India and China and the EU is left for Davies. It will be a hard nut to crack
According to Radio 4 Liam Fox can see who he likes but cannot sign anything

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 14-Jul-16 16:44:01

No mention of the DoT, but Chris Grayling is the new transport minister, so it might be that those 'sources' got it wrong.

whitewave Thu 14-Jul-16 16:41:50

Oh dear the news of Johnsons appointment has been met with a lot of jollity and puzzlement throughout the world.
