Are Gransnetters just vicious online trolls?

Well, we are apparently a bunch of bullies on this site:

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3689188/The-vicious-online-trolls-grannies-according-fellow-gran-crossed-unleashed-spite.html

Some poor innocent (who is media savvy enough to get an article published in a national newspaper) is in a state of shock after posting on Gransnet. A whole page in DM basically complaining that she posted on an internet forum and is shocked that not everyone found her as witty and amusing as she clearly thinks she is.

Shame on you grannies for upsetting the poor little flower! On the bright side though, she did manage to get her article published, so that was probably a nice little earner for her.grin

Thanks for the info and link to the blog, daphnedill. It's a bit over-dramatic, but I do love being described as an "ethereal vampire". Do you thank GNHQ will let me change my screen name?grin

Bridget Frew's DM article has left me (almost) speechless.
Someone upthread said she wrote for the Oldie.
As someone who has subscribed since the first issue back in 1992, can I just say I've never seen an article by Ms Frew, and I doubt that she would ever get one published as the writing is of a high standard.

We obviously do not read the right papers, jingl.
grin
It's quite easy to google if you know the original was in the DM (it says so above).
Then a search of their website typing in 'Gransnet' brought up all the other articles.

I could show you how to do a link if you like djen wink

GN are keeping their heads down hmm

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 14-Jul-16 21:28:28

I think we should stop discussing this woman. It's not worth the effort and no doubt she's getting a good degree of satisfaction at being discussed - here, on her blog and on the DM comments.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 14-Jul-16 21:29:33

Yes, I'm surprised there hasn't been a post with a green background.

trisher Thu 14-Jul-16 21:33:27

Just occurred to me that this article might be said to be unacceptable and follows the long tradition of abuse and condemnation of older women that has its origins and roots in a culture that condemned them as evil and as witches. That it is in fact us who are being bullied and reviled.

Jalima Thu 14-Jul-16 21:33:43

Yes, she is probably enjoying all the publicity.

millymouge Thu 14-Jul-16 21:36:48

Have just read what the DM printed, and there is a comment from a psychologist about grandmas and their lives and getting older, blooming cheek. angry

Mumsy, if a post and a poster are one and the same, then when someone changes their mind about something have they changed in some fundamental way too? Or is the subject or idea they've changed their mind about a separate 'thing' from them that can be thought about or spoken about from different points of view?

Good philosophers try to look at more than one side of an issue and may present arguments in favour of opposing views, without saying which they prefer. They are not presenting themselves in their writings; they are presenting ideas.

I have tried to write this post politely. I could have written it rudely. I am not the post.

thatbags Thu 14-Jul-16 22:24:31

So, if you or anyone else 'attacks' my post, you are not attacking me. If you called me names, you would be attacking me. You can't call a post names that will hurt its feelings, though you could say it was rubbish if you thought it was. You wouldn't be saying the writer of the post was rubbish, only what they had written.

Post and poster are not one and the same.

Elegran Thu 14-Jul-16 22:26:38

It is possible for a poster to completely invent a post, too, either to deceive or to amuse.

durhamjen Thu 14-Jul-16 22:27:51

Thanks for the offer, Jalima. It takes too much energy at the moment to write the little I do write. I'm sure I'll remember how to do links eventually.
Perhaps she needs more ideas from us. Perhaps she has run out of ideas and we should give her some more.

I found that fatuous article highly amusing."Retired gentlefolk"? And I thought it was 2016 not 1916. As for the psychologist – well! What an absurd and meaningless generalisation about people from different parts of the country and abroad, different backgrounds and cultures, different educational history, different experiences, different lifestyles and, perhaps something he hadn't considered at all, different ages (decades apart in some cases).

Elegran Thu 14-Jul-16 22:33:24

Jalima "GN are keeping their heads down" Keeping a dignified silence, more like, and avoiding a potential brawl.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 14-Jul-16 22:47:23

Whaddya mean Elegran? Don't get that. confused

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 14-Jul-16 22:48:06

Who has invented something?

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 14-Jul-16 22:51:45

I think a post and a poster are one and the same thing. You can't separate a person's thoughts from that person can you? Our thoughts are us.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 14-Jul-16 22:53:47

Those "philosophers" would be deceiving people Bags.

Jalima Thu 14-Jul-16 23:01:15

Thanks for the offer, Jalima. It takes too much energy at the moment to write the little I do write. I'm sure I'll remember how to do links eventually.
Are you OK djen?

Jalima Thu 14-Jul-16 23:02:02

Well, that was a daft post, obviously you are not.
I hope you're OK is what I meant

Jalima Thu 14-Jul-16 23:06:30

Our thoughts are us
Well, I've heard of 'you are what you eat' but not 'you are what you think' hmm

Anyway, i just ate some blueberries but it doesn't mean I am a blueberry
goes away to think

I think I am tall, slim and beautiful.

Katek Thu 14-Jul-16 23:15:23

Perhaps we should be getting paid if our posts are being quoted in DM!! Who owns copyright to our words online? We could jointly sue DM for breach of copyright! I don't post on here to create copy for newspapers.

daphnedill Thu 14-Jul-16 23:16:49

I don't think dj will mind my posting that she's not too well at the moment, but she and her links will be back!

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 14-Jul-16 23:18:06

The owners of Gransnet/Mumsnet own the copyright.
